The Why? Chronicles: Honda CR-Z

When I was 18 I moved out of my parent's house and into downtown Portland. I was obsessed with cars and whenever I went out walking (I did a lot of walking since street parking was so scarce) I would check to see if the car I was walking by was a manual or an auto. Those of you who notice my avatar may realize this is slightly an obsession of mine. I'm sure people who saw me doing this thought I was looking for stuff to steal (and actually about 3 months into living there I had my car broken into and stereo stolen) but I just was just curious if they'd got a 3 pedal or 2 pedal vehicle. It became a game, where I would guess the transmission before looking. New-ish Corolla? Auto. MkII VW Golf? Manual. I even started using terms if I found a certain number of manuals in a row. (4 in a row for instance, which I stole from bowling, is a turkey). I still do this today. Turkeys are very, very rare nowadays. :(

All this is to say that when a new black CR-Z showed up on my block recently, I knew I'd see a manual there. I mean why would one even consider anything else? Yet when I checked, I saw:

Kinja'd!!!

And now you know the reason behind me calling it: The Why? Chronicles. A CR-Z is a hybrid, which is fine, of course (I test drove both a Prius and an Insight before leasing a MINI Clubman). Yet the question comes up here: why purchase a CR-Z with the CVT? The CR-Z is the only car on the market with an available manual transmission. I can't think of any other reason you'd buy one. Like, at all. If you are shopping hybrids with the CVT, there is an Insight right next to this CR-Z. If you want something cheaper but with the same mileage or better, hey there is a Honda Fit on the other side. Both of these cars seat 5 and are infinitely more versatile. Why would you choose the CR-Z? Worse mileage and less versatility? Sign this guy up!

When I bought a Honda Del Sol the salesperson told me: 'and even if she wants to bring a friend along, she can't!'

Honda salespeople are the classiest...

Anyway, that's my verdict on this confusing combo: someone who wants to demonstrate they are single, but can't drive a manual. What does OPPO think?

I always check transmissions too, I thought I was just weird.

I guess they bought it because the CRZ looks fast. Bet they were disappointed

I do the exact same thing! Imagine if everyone rowed their own to begin with...

That's awesome! I feel like we should start a support group for people who must compulsively check to see what kind of transmission that car has. :)

Driving a manual is a lot like getting married. Sometimes it's a choice, sometimes it's not. There are some that find it's easier being single, some find that don't have a choice and remain single because no one will teach them how to get married. Sometimes you have no choice but to pick one before it's better in the long run. Some people don't care, and will marry the first girl that puts out. Could they do better? Do they regret it later? There are marriage enthusiasts, but they don't have to get married to appreciate it. You can't really put a label on an automatic wedding want-to-be single manual single man.

I think I just confused myself.

I check too, but there's literally no point. I live in NYC. It's auto or die sadly.

Anyways, I guess people just don't care about manuals, or cars, or driving even.

I check for transmissions because in Hong Kong, nearly every car has an auto 'box.

Ooh look, a Miata in the school carpark. Nope! It's also an automatic.

I thought I was the only person who did this! The best is when you aren't expecting it: The other day outside my school I looked inside a first gen BMW X5 fully expecting to see slushbox and to my delight it had a 5-speed. But the opposite of that is just depressing; I shockingly saw an RX8 automatic recently and wondered who the hell buys a car that revs to 9k with a 4 speed automatic.
