Anyone ever done skim coats and that sort of crap to remove waves in a body? How do I do it and do you guys have any tips for a bodywork newbie?

Block sand until your waves are gone.

I am not a professional body man. Here is what I did. I took a plastic piece that spanned at least two of the waves and spread the filler Then used a large block to sand down the filler. That way I did not go between the high points of the waves and was able to achieve a smooth finish.

How deep are the waves? Assuming they're 1/8 or less, it's OK to fill them. Hit the area with a big sanding block to find the high spots, then fill the lows and block sand again. Use a rattle can to put a light (very light) coat of paint on and block it again to find any low spots you missed the first time. Keep doing that until you can sand the area without any paint showing (no more low spots).

If the waves are spread over a large area you might want one of those big drywall sanding rigs. They're not as rigid as a real sanding block, but it's a good way to cover a lot of area.

Anything deeper than 1/8 you should hammer & dolly as smooth as possible. It's not hard once you get the hang of it.
