Hi Opps,
i'm 22 and am bored of my current car (2011 Sonata) and wanted to get something more exciting but at the same time classy enough to take the car to a client meeting if needed. i have a well paying steady job but rather save up and buy a house in the next year than a brand new car.
I'v been on craigslist OC/LA and saw a couple of 2008 528 sports/prem package that i like with 50-60k miles asking for around 17-18k. i dont want to deal with a high maintenance car or one that will cost a lot to maintain. Anyone have any experience on this car?
The biggest question i have is, I know people roll back miles on these cars all the time. is there any way to check and verify they are not rolled back?
Anything else i should be looking out for or any other cars i should consider?
Thanks
It's a "Porch-uh"

My recommendation is buy CPO then plan on getting rid of it in a few years. I had a 2008 535i that had some issues (coil packs, oil leaks) that were covered by the CPO warranty. Once it was out of warranty, the cost of ownership shot up. Because of the computer, almost everything needs to be done at the dealer or certified service center (or you buy the interface to hook up to the computer). Updates to the computer have to be done at a dealer. I had to pay $550 to replace the battery, which normally I would have done myself but couldn't.
I ended up selling it and getting an E39 M5. If you're handy, you can do most of the work yourself.

Most "should I get" questions around here encounter encouragement as a default. It's not so much about what you Oppo, it's about how you make it Oppo, and how Oppo you are driving it. Broadly, should you get a Bim 5-series? Go for it.
As to "should I get"s in regard to specific cars beyond make/etc., we're willing to be a bit more discerning. There are always bad examples of good cars and vice versa. Outside my knowledge pool on this one generally. If you can locate a registration for that car with different mileage/carfax, that would indicate rollback, otherwise, I don't know.

Hi 22,
Older and out-of-warranty BMWs will be both high maintenance and expensive to maintain. Keep that in mind while you shop- it's no Hyundai. There's a reason it's so cheap, mileage has little to do with it.

You could keep your Sonata and buy another car right? An old Jaguar should be quite cheap I'd say.. and classy as.. well... Grey poupon :)

For that money, you should look at a higher mileage 335i Coupe. They're a blast. Just get the warranty.

You think i can get a certified 335 with warranty at that price point? that def sounds like a better option as i'm sensing trouble from the other comments for an out of warranty 5 series

Sounds expensive. may be i should consider a certified 335 with warranty as mentioned in another comment?

Ahh.. I see :) A 5 series is a nice car though, awesome handling and stuff (unless the US version is different from the EU version)

335 with warranty for 18k? Not gonna happen, you can get a 3rd party warranty but they are going to be very expenisve

This is all terrible advice. Suggesting he buy an even higher mileage N54? Cmon man. Here is some solid advise, you're 22. Save your money. You have you're whole life in front of you. Even if you waited 10 years to get a BMW you would only be 32. Save your money, keep the hyundai

This is why i love opps. Waiting out is probably a better option at this point as i really dont NEED a new car the child inside me just wants one. but the Sonata is sooooo boring :(

20k gets you a medium mileage 335i Coupe. Anything less and you'll be looking at 100,000+ miles. If you get the first generation ones, with the N54, you'll have twin turbos at your disposal but you may go through a fuel pump or two. Oh well. Only get the 6-speed if it has the M package. Happy hunting!

so then buy something more fun, just not a high maintenance 5 series. I have been a petrol head my whole life. I have wanted an M3 since i was a kid. I am an engineer. I am 32. I JUST got a 128 last summer, CPO. I wanted to get the M3, but my wife was pregnant with our first kid. I didnt want to overextend ourselves. Wife said, I can get one when I'm 40. I'm ok with that.
Save your money bro. Life is LONG. There is plenty of time.

Warranty would be on top of the 18-20k. Just find a properly maintained one and you'll be fine. Buying high mileage German cars is an exciting sport. I have 270,000 kms on my E30 and 187,000 on my 911. :) Oh and I'm 23. So in a similar position.

"Should I get a BMW? i dont want to deal with a high maintenence car or one that will cost a lot to maintain."
Then don't get a BMW =P
BMW = Broke My Wallet or Bring More Wallet or you get the point.
Besides, that's the Bangle Butt 5, ugh. Get a 02-03 low mileage/well-cared for E39 instead.

If my recent purchase of a 2007 550 is any indication, if you do end up buying one, ABSOLUTELY buy a warranty with it. Mine's been close to a disaster. I've paid about $2800, but the warranty covered the remaining what-ended-up-being-$16K pretty much engine rebuild.

Yyyyyyyyyep.
No bueno. And just this afternoon, now, the clock keeps resetting and the auto-unlock isn't happening. Hoping it's just a loose battery connection, not some crazy fucking gremlin. I just got the damn thing back from the shop.

smart answer: no. save your money. if you're bored with the Sonata, look at something that's sporty but cheaper to maintain like an Infiniti G37S.
but if your heart is set on an E60, the 528i is certainly cheaper to own and maintain than a 545i/550i...

before the sonata i had an 03 Altima 3.5 SE. LOVED that car but the car was expensive as hell to maintain. everything that could have gone bad went bad including the engine. G37S shares a very similar motor so it scares me but may be it was just my particular car.

That would be a more realistic option. The more work you can do yourself, the better. That means oil and filter changes regularly, as well as brake jobs if you can. BMW service departments like money.

I think it was. Also, forgot to mention when I started looking at 5ers, I thought the 530 was far better than the 28. Those few extra horses made a difference.

Everytime the car is serviced or inspected the mileage is recorded. You can tell from the Carfax if the mileage has been tampered with.

I have no personal experience with Nissan's VQ motor, but a friend of mine just sold his 350Z with 165k? miles on it that ran fine, and the VG33DE in my X-Terra has been rock solid reliable given the stress tests I have put it through. I guess my question regarding your Altima is at what mileage did you purchase it, and how well did you treat it with respect to both abusing the motor and doing maintenance? not that I guess it would matter if you're looking at a G37S, as you still have the unknown question of how well the previous owner treated the car. but, if it makes you feel better, there are plenty of high mileage VQ motors out there, so either the motors are not that unreliable or they are worth owners putting the money into them to keep them running..
that said, if you're complaining about the cost to maintain an Altima, you really should stay away from a BMW. pretending they had the same reliability, look at the cost difference for parts (if you do the work yourself) and repairs (if you paid a shop) between the two.
Lexus makes some rock cars. again, a lot of it depends on how the previous owner treated it. but the problem with Lexus is the SC300/400 is a great car (but old, and many are old enough to fall into the wrong hands), the Lexus IS-F seems like a great car (but is out of both of our price range), and that's really about it. I mean, I guess the IS300 is nice for the money, but it still doesn't exude either luxury or performance. that said, they are a solid value now. I honestly disliked them when they were new as they just seemed so expensive for what they were. with age, I have come to acknowledge that owners sacrificed performance and luxury for reliability. and while I would prefer an SC300 (ideally with a 2jzgte swap) or SC400, I would still love to own an IS300 as second car.

I don't understand Jalopnik's obsession with buying huge cars with tiny engines. A base model 5 series isn't much of an upgrade but will cost you a ton more to maintain worst of both worlds.
If you want a BMW, why not a 135 or 335? Or for bang-for-buck fun, a 370Z. Or if you want sport + luxury, a G37.

I bought the Altima with 69K miles driven by an older lady so don't think she abused it unless she had a wild side :p I personally did all the maintenance myself and i was not hooning it but was definitely enjoying the cars performance which i loved. In the process my alternator/cat converters/ all fuel sensors/ radiator / starter, burned oil like no other so was always topping off and oil changes needed to be done ever 3k miles went out by the time i hit 140k Miles (i commute a lot). than one day out of the blue the engine gave out completely and all was flooded with oil and my newish cat that i got from nissan had blown shit into the engine causing it to die quicker. Got myself a new engine and a cat from racing line performance which worked a lot better. drove the car till i hit 200k miles and it started burning oil again so decided to sell it. see it was my first car and i loved that thing and till today i wish i never sold it but had to move on. thing with that car was i no longer trusted it and never knew when it would break down on me as the check engine light and i seemed to be best friends.
may be ill look into other options more reliable (acura/lexus/may be mazda) lets see :)
