I know I know, I always seem most attracted to the cars that have the most problems, but I've been talking to this guy, and he said that he purchased the car from a dealership in Jan of 2011, he has all maintenance records from then on, but prior to that, he doesn't know what was fixed/replaced. It has 158,000 miles so safe to assume that it's had the timing belt done.

He is talking about there is an srs light going off, and apparently it is because of the seatbelt buckle is messing up for whatever reason, S80 owners, have you had this happen to you? And how much did it cost to fix?

And the more important part is, yes it's a 2000, but he had the transmission replaced at 124,000 miles in Nov 2011, so it is fairly new. Hes asking 3,500, what would be an appropriate amount for this car?

What transmission did he put in? If its the same model AW55 then itll need replacing down the road depending on mileage.

that seems about right for that price :] Make sure the timing belt or flame trap box has been done recent.

"Sometimes takes two times to start."

If he used a thorough-enough code reader to diagnose the seat belt issue, he should also know why the car apparently needs a tune-up.

If you want this car for just a simple, yet kinda cool daily driver for a few years, do it. Just get rid of it when the transmission or whatever goes in a few years.

Flame trap box? And is an srs light hard to fix, like in this regard if it really is just the buckle, would that be expensive dealer wise?

Hmm, that actually is a really good point, I might go meet with him tomorrow, so I'll ask him. So the original transmission model was the AW55? What model was the replacement transmissions? I assume they were redesigned and better transmissions later on? It was replaced in 2011, and this is a 2000 model, so I am assuming that they would have put in the redesigned tranny, if there was one. Alot of assuming haha

Well, the whole reason I'm going after a newer car, is so that I have one I don't have to worry about, and I can just concentrate on rebuilding my 944. I have an 86 Accord, it works, but to get it to pass inspection I would have to spend at least a good 1200 dollars, so I figure rather then just throw money down the drain with never being able to get any of it back, might as well just buy a newer car.

I have to look up the exact designation but cant atm as im mobile but the AW55 was used in all P2 Volvos post 2000. If that tranny didnt come from a car that was 03 or later, its junk.

That actually is exactly my plan, I just want a good daily driver that I can keep for as long as possible. I can deal with crap going out but I would rather not deal with a tranny going out. I'm talking to someone about a 2004 S60, but this one is cheaper and more along of what I actually want. Do you know if they redesigned the transmissions later on for this cars so that they wouldn't go out after 100k?

Okay. Think that nowadays they would still throw an AW55 back in it? Or they would have enough sense to toss in a newer one? I'll definitely check up on that one

Well in an area like D.C. it's more variables then just a good dd for 5k. I mean I spent 800 dollars on my current dd, spent another 1500 or so in repairs over 6 months. It was a decent little dd, but now I can't find replacement safety parts so it won't be able to pass inspection, thus I need a new one. And most of these cars, unless it's something like an S80 T6, isn't worth anywhere near 5k. Not like they are in demand so the price can be inflated.

Or oil trap as some call it, it's part of the crankcase ventilation and needs to be replaced if the crankcase is not at negative 2 bar pressure. We replace them all the time and they only last about 60-80k miles. If the oil trap goes bad, your motor will have positive pressure and will cause your engine seals to blow and leak bad.
As for a driver's seat buckle, we have them listed here for $77.11. Not sure if you've ever changed a seat belt buckle.

Try this if you're thinking of buying one:

Is it a manual or automatic?

It's an auto, take a look at the link I had posted at the bottom of my posting

Oh, right, I don't know how I missed that. That page I linked says stuff about autos and gearbox cooling issues that can be prevented:

Geartronic autobox failures increasingly common, particularly on cars that have been towing. The transmission oil cooler on these cars is modular and can be increased in capacity by adding modules. This is ESSENTIAL for towing (though often overlooked) and may also be necessary for other types of use.

By the way, I got distracted looking at S80s for sale and forgot to say that I've considered buying one a few times. Really handsome cars.

Then I got even more distracted and started looking at Avantimes, Multiplas, and seventies Citroens.

I've replaced seat belts but not buckles, can't imagine it's all that much harder.

The AW55 was used in a lot of Volvos even post 02, it was just an improved version of it. It's also a GM tranny that was used in a lot of European market cars (Opel/Vauxhalls)

Yeah I read that Volvo raided the GM parts pin on these cars, but the guy had said that he replaced it in 2011, and that it wasn't a stock part. I think when I get an inspection done I'll check out the part number on it

For many reasons i don't really like Volvo's aftermarket parts world. For my truck and BMW i'll buy aftermarket stuff all the time lol. Volvo aftermarket parts we've just always had issues. One reason is because Vovlo parts are very VIN specific. If you are looking for a radiator for example on a 2005 XC90, there is about 10 different ones just in the US market (with premair, w/o premair, standard, high performance, many chassis breaks, 5cyl, 6cyl, 8cyl) They are all slightly different and the aftermarket never truly specifies. But..... if I absolutely had to choose, fcpeuro is ok, and your local salvage yard of course.

Ah alright. I don't think I'll do much after market wise, because this would be my commuter and i don't really want to modify a daily, just talking mainly about replacement oem parts, appreciate the suggestion. What do you think is the hardest thing to work on, on the s80's?
