I'm writing a story and I'm almost 90% sure that I'm giving the main characters a 997 911 4s. I mean, it's fast, comfortable, has AWD, gets decent MPGs (30 ish), with an extended fuel tank in the place of the trunk, fuel won't be an issue when going several days without filling up, raise the ride height a bit, give it rally tires, and you're good to go.

going several days without filling up
Are you towing a fuel tanker behind you?

Although I agree with you, the F-Type Coupe makes a great alternative.

How about the Ferrari 612 ?

A Supercharged Range Rover. Fuel economy wouldn't be the best, but you can still some jerry cans in the best.
Of course, 911's are the coolest but I'm not sure it would be that comfortable on a crappy road.

I'll keep it in the family but say Cayenne Turbo S instead.

No but if you convert the front trunk into a fuel tank (i'm thinking 25 gallons) and you already have a 16 gallon tank and you average around 30 mpg then you've got about 1,230 miles of range, best case scenario.

That actually might be a better idea.

That's two days.

Set the story in Europe and it can be a diesel. Or a Range Rover diesel, which might be Top Gear's choice.

I actually thought about the old Touareg V10 TDI. But the 1st-gen Touareg/Cayenne is 800 lbs heavier than the current version.

S350 bluetec or g65 amg. Either would be better then a cramped 911.

Citroen SM - floaty hydropneumatic suspension, quick for its day and with a 20 gallon fuel tank, impressive fuel economy for its time according to the internets.

Something large, American, and '80s or '90s. I'm thinking Caprice or Seville. It'll have more than enough power to get out of it's own way, and the suspension will be made out of marshmallows so you could run over a large animal and not feel a thing.

I think you might have got the best one there. Not sure I can top that.

Definitely the Jaguar XJ 3.0l diesel. All-alloy bodyshell and big diesel add up to stellar economy for such a large car, a remap will be seeing 250bhp and shedloads of torque, and it's got a legendarily good ride.

Jag XJ
The XJR is the ultimate long-distance ass hauler. Why? It's the classiest 4-door on the market today

The 997's suspension makes coco a happy bunny.
