My dad told me to assume everyone in a car is actively trying to kill me, and sometimes it really seems like they are.

My father in law almost did this last year. There was a slow semi ahead of us and a bike was coming the other way.

Problem was, he was in 5th gear and at 1200rpm. Our car has absolutely no low end torque (to make a safe pass, I downshift to be at least 3krpm to start the pass). And instead of downshifting, he kept on with his foot down.

"You won't make it. Let the bike pass us"
"Don't worry. He can go off the road to let me pass".

When the car finally reached enough speed and passed the truck, the biker was already off the road.

Last time he drove my wife's car.

TL;DR: My father in law almost hit a biker because he was driving like a dick for no reason.

Yet another reason I don't like motorcycles.

I used a motorbike as my only source of transportation for years. I tell people when you ride a bike you have to assume everyone in a car is actively trying to kill you.

Rule 1_Remember, no one can see you. Ride appropriately.

Rule 2_ After making eye contact, and getting the wave through by ALL the other drivers, refer to rule 1

Actually almost died because I forgot Rule 2.

Same with a bicycle.

Another safety item. Always run your high beam in the day. I see so many bikes that are running their low beam and you cannot even see it. Remember low beams only at night.

That's why I gave up road bikes for mountain bikes. I'd rather take my chances with mountain lions.

Fair enough. For me it's pay $140 to park a car or pay nothing to park a bike. At this point it's vastly more good than bad and I don't mind saving money.

Not that it is in the same ball park but I used to do a lot of longboarding in college. I'd make eye contact with drivers and then realize that they looked right through me. I learned a lot about staying safe on the road from doing that. Motorcycles scare the shit out of me though so there's that

I'm trying to understand this. Was that car going for an aggressive pass or really trying to kill that biker?

When I lived in San Francisco the motorbike was the way to go. Parking was hell there, but not for a bike, and once I had decent rain gear all was well. That was until a transvestite in a Galaxy 500 ran a stop sign, and I t-boned him/her totaling my 1973 BMW R75/5.. I ended up replacing it with a Kawasaki GPZ 550. Much better for city use.

Sorry that parking cost is per year not per day.

And I have to say while those are both cool bikes that BMW is just so damn pretty. So sad it's gone.

The bike was emerald green when I bought it. I rebuilt it in black. The buyer was a young guy who said he loved this style of BMW. His father rode up on an R 69S and made disparaging comments about the "toaster tank". I think it found a good home.
