Yes. This is happening. What do you consider the most Jalop van?
My nomination would have to go to my own shitbox: The GMC Safari/Chevy Astro twins.
Okay, so, its got a V6 making 195 horsepower. But the thing has some decent torque behind it, enough to chirp the tires taking off from a stop full throttle. Plus, its 100% possible to put an LS motor under the hood. Not to mention they were !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

These can also be lifted and put on mud tires for taking 6 of your friends off-roading with you.
Or drop it and pimp it the hell out.
Either way, you've got a kick ass van that you could use to comfortably travel across the country. You could also try to shuffle it down some back roads, laughing your ass of at how much the body rolls, or how under powered it is. Keeping momentum is key, sort of like in a Miata. Yes, I just compared a van to a Miata. Whatcha gonna do about it!?

First gen previa - Supercharged, AWD, mid engined minivan that could come with a 5-speed manual. My dream jalopmobile is to get one and paint it up like this-

The people in front of it perfectly fit that vans stereotype

Just re-watched that episode yesterday. I want to believe that James and Hammond had no idea.

False - that van is too valuable, and therefore not one to be chopped up for modifications. Therefore it is a classic and therefore not jalop.

You could get an Astro with a V8 right? I always hear a few burbling thinking it's a Sierra or something, but nope. It's the spaceship.

The highest power option was the 4.3 V6 but a lot of people have swapped V8s into them, mostly the 5.7l from the 90s pickups

Drivers go for less than 10 grand. Rollers for less than 4. Still cheap.

Is it though? Is it really? THink of the long term. 20 years from now, what makes the better story "I chopped up a now priceless classic to make a hunk of scrap" or "I chopped up a beige minivan and made it into a rally car"?

One of these, for obvious reasons.

"Rather than restoring a rusting classic and sticking it in a museum I turned it into something fun" is always a good story.
Also, I think you're giving the Corvair van too much credit as a classic. They really haven't appreciated all that much...it's too niche.

i've tooled around in my grandma's '92 dodge b350. it's got a 318/lockup 4-spd auto. it's a motorhome that weighs over 4 tons, and the steering is looser than sasha grey. but it'll knock down over 20mpg's @ 55mph. i've put maybe 10k miles on it, driving her around the country & as soon as she lets me it's getting a badass mural all over the sides. (yea, got a bathroom/shower & kitchen.)

Only one of these 90's Mid Engine icons comes with a supercharger.
Actually, as far as I know, the Previa is the only production car that ever had a supercharged mid-engine and AWD.
I can't find another. I've tried.

How about a Mitsubishi Delica? This is not the most outrageous example because there a really mad ones out there, but it's quite nice.

Not many vehicles can comfortably carry 6 people and 2 tubas but the Vanagon with the Westfalia Weekender conversion could and for that my vote goes to it, not to mention the rear facing seats can either be folded up or completely removed and the rear bench being able to fold out into a double bed and having quite a bit of storage under it.
