without any argument, the Citroen dealer agreed to fix my dad's car, taking the blame for the issue as they likely caused it when changing the struts last October. New axle, bunch of new suspension parts, body work, the whole lot to fix the issue, and some general maintenance work with a thorough looking over. All just "Terribly sorry about that Mr MonkeyPuzzle's Dad, we'll never let this happen ever again and will do all we can to make you a happy customer!"

sure, if the other wheel wasn't at full lock in the opposite direction in an attempt to get it off the road :P

I was thinking the "bolt escaping" would be a symptom of not being tight enough, though you didn't mention the strut job last post that I can recall. That would make a lot of sense, and good on them for taking care of you.

not tightened enough, and I imagine it is a castle nut with a retaining wire too, so perhaps that was missed also.
