This *was* a Ranchero. Then custom stuff happened.

He wrecked it on the back end - that's how that part occurred. The first stage (DeSoto grill, mild roof chop, tweaks) was fairly sane.

I give him credit for being different. It's just not eye-appealing to me.

The back end has potential, but it's just too damn short. The nose is an atrocity - he should have stayed working within the De Soto frame of reference.

I think the back ends inspiration was the ala kart pickup built by Barris and the first roadster to win the AMBR twice.

Customs are like race cars, they are obsolete after one show season so changes have to made to keep them competitive and fresh. Eventually things just get wilder and Wilde causing things to get out of hand.

It's always risky trying to make a *new* custom out of an existing one. Sooner or later you run into competing design cues disease...

It's funny, some of Barris' work I tend to think of as hackish, but that's extremely well executed. I don't like the side reliefs on the bed, but other than that, excellent.

I'm loving that front end but as others have already said the back end is too short. So close so close.

Na I imagine most hot rods are more of a "hold my beer" type situation.

Oh yeah very common problem in the mid to late 60s. Luckily my family's custom never had that happen. But those Chrysler/Desoto headlights were popular in the late 50s early 60s. Our custom has them in it as well.

This was the near the end of the Sam Barris era, when the cars were very nicely built before they got really out of hand.

This rear looks cool. The one in the pic up top, though. Nope nope nope nope. Too wacky.
