I have a question regarding students in high school. As many of you know, I'm 16 now and in the middle of high school. something about it has been bothering me a lot. The dumb actions of kids. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH CARS! I want to know about your high school experiences since so many of you are from so many generations. Thanks!
All I hear lately is kids saying how drunk they got the other night or how good that weed was. I got offered some some pot brownies last week. Every day, there is a group of kids smoking those E-cigs in the bathroom. Here is my question, were all kids in high school like this? I wouldn't know and its not something I can simply ask my parents.
I don't ever do that stuff. I've never had any alcohol, never done any drugs, never smoked, never anything really dangerous. I get my thrills by driving. That is my ecstacy. But for so many of these kids, they need to use drugs and drink to feel anything. Is this just a recent problem with our (my) generation or was it like this for you too?
Another thing that bothers me is the sex. All these kids do is have sex. We have freshmen coming in who are already pregnant. Another local high school which has a day care for the student moms, is over-capacity from all the teen mothers. Were kids always doing it this young? Just the other day, two kids got caught fucking in the handicapped bathroom stall during class.
I know this sounds crazy. But I really want to know. It has been bothering me for quite some time now. I feel that I cannot fit in down here because I don't do stupid shit. The worst part is I'm in the good part of town at the good school in my county. Its relatively wealthy and built up and I'm in no way in a drug infested bad town.
Thanks for your input. Image from a GIS of "High school cars" and it was the first to show up. Poor kid. At least its a convertible.

No, not everyone does that. I didn't do any of it. But I guess it depends on where the school you go to is. Also, I think stupid stuff I did in my car in high school was more dangerous than a lot of those things. So maybe not better.
Glad that isn't your car. That would suck.

Yes. Like, a shocking amount.
And from what I've seen, weed seems to be the biggest waste of money ever.

I'm a senior and it's pretty much the same here, although no one's gotten pregnant. I've never smoked, gotten drunk or high either.
I feel like the people that do are either just stupid or extremely desperate for attention.

When I was in high school, it was full of stuff like that, minus the vaping and sex in the bathroom. I knew a girl who got drunk every week, and spammed my MSN when drunk, (yes you read that right, and this was before Facebook was cool)

I know all these people that get it for free or really cheap. A few months ago, before my license and I was on the bus, a girl was talking about getting some weed. Someone else asked her "How do you afford it?" she replies "I'm a teenage girl." Interpret that as you want.
All these girls do it and share it with their friends. I've never done that stuff before? Is it really that good? Honestly.

Im nearly 20 finishing my freshman year of college. Everyone has there vice. Some more risky than others. I never tried the crazier things because they never appealed to me and as I was joining the Army my senior year I didn't have that choice anyway. If you are going to college it is just something you have to get used to and you can always find people who think the same as you.

I was in HS from 97 - 01. What you describe sounds a lot what I had to deal with. College is no different. Now that I'm 30, I still hear a lot about drugs, booze, and pregnancy. You just need to pick your friends wisely, because this is something that never goes away for some people.

My school is ranked like 5th highest in the country and it's still like this. The smell of weed is pretty prominent throughout the school. And all everyone talks about is how much they drink and smoke and how much sex they have. Not to mention there's at least 5 girls pregnant at any given time. I have a few friends who do some of the stuff, but they know not to do it around me. I've just become used to it at this point, and I'm only in 10th grade.

It seems that the feeling of becoming high or drunk, helps people "Escape" the problems of the real world. Then it comes back to haunt them, and a high turns into an addiction, and there. Fucked for life.
For sex, it's natural human instinct and I guess that's what fuels that.
I've never done drugs, I simply refused them.

Don't do anything stupid. You're ahead of the curve by realizing your peers are idiots.
Do your own thing, find people that like the same things. This will probably be easier in college.
I was like you in a sense, surrounded by idiots that would drink and smoke. I never understood it and stayed the fuck away. Glad I did, someone I knew of was shot and killed in a drug deal.
I stuck to my ways, had fun doing the things I liked to do without resorting to drinking or smoking or any of that shit. When I got to college, I made friends that were just like me and had the time of my life, all without drinking or doing drugs.
It's not worth it. Why ruin your life just because your peers are?
I guess to answer your question, kids were like that when I was in High School between 2003-2007. I'm sure it was like that when my brother was in high school before me, and I can almost guarantee you it was like that when my parents or your parents were in school. There's a reason some people become doctors, scientists, engineers, and business owners while other people flip burgers or fold t-shirts for a living.

I just graduated last June, and it's pretty much like that everywhere now. Where I went to school, it was pretty much 75% of people doing that, with the rest being band geeks, too smart for that, or kids who had common sense (me). I'm just like you, never had drugs, and I personally hate the taste of alcohol. The sex thing, by the end of high school, you'll (most likely) being doing it too, just a little more respectable/less trashy.

High school senior here, from the middle of the Midwest.
Honestly, my experience with high school (two years, I was homeschooled before junior year) is dependant on several things:
1. The size of the high school — larger is generally better for getting away from the 'riff raff' and findind more people that are interested in the same things you are. My graduating class is 450 people, with total student body hovering around 2000.
2. What classes you take. I'm taking classes like AP English 12, AP Government, Honors Physics 2, etc. classes that aren't required and aren't easy. I've got a couple friends in "regular" English 12 class or "regular" Physics class and they see what you see: people being complete douches, bragging about getting laid/wasted/high, and meatheads that extort homework help from people via force. Meanwhile I'm hanging with funny intelligent people in my Honors and AP classes, and generally starting to really enjoy high school (sadly, a few months before I leave forever).
Of course, it helps that the administration at my school says that my class of 2014 is the most well-behaved class in memorable (20 years) history of the school.

I don't want a contact high or a drink or any of that shit in my car. Keep it at home. So far they've listened pretty well.

And I told them that what they do at home is really none of my business. but when Im around keep it away from me. I don't want anything to do with it. I graduated in 1984. It sounds like not a whole lot has changed. What HAS changed is social media. In my day, people did those things but didn't tell the world about it. There were boundaries. Because people are smoking dope and having sex all around you doesn't mean you have to. I smoked a lot of pot in high school, but one of my best friends never touched it. Make your own choices, pick your friends wisely, don't ever do anything that makes you uncomfortable. You'll be fine.

When I was a freshman in college I made awesome friends. We spent our nights playing video games and watching movies. Across the hall kids were drinking and smoking.
I think we had more fun...and I never woke up with a hangover, STD, or next to the toilet bowl puking my guts out like some of the people across the hall.

It's a real thing sadly. I'm 19 and went to an all boys boarding school for 6 years, so can't relate to high schools too much. But, once I got to college, everyone just experiments with alcohol and drugs for 4 years. I say 'experiment' sarcastically, they know exactly what they are doing. Much like you, I take time once or twice a week, get in my car, and just explore the area and new roads. It's my fix. Sorry to say that this is what the world's like. Don't fall for stupidity. Though, I don't want to be a hypocrite. I do enjoy drinking delicious beverages and I have done the waltz with Mary Jane. I enjoy things in moderation. Overall, be yourself, have fun, and don't be stupid. I would recommend that your experimentation waits till college, though. That's what it's for and I don't want you to make a mistake and screw up your HS career.

I was in high school from '98 to '02. I'm sure there were kids in my class like the people you describe, but no one in my crew was like that. That's not how we rolled. I didn't drink or have sex until college, and I've never smoked pot or done drugs of any kind. And I regret nothing.

As a current high school student, I completely agree with you. It doesn't bother me though because it's their decision and it doesn't affect me. I have friends who drink and friends who don't and the fact that I'm not into that scene hasn't strained my relationships with them. My only issue is that it seems like the dating scene doesn't exist anymore in a traditional sense; at least at my school people basically just hook up and fuck random people at parties and then occasionally wind up having relationships with them. As a non-drinker, this is off putting and seems unnatural. In 15 years, most of these people will probably be more mature and ready to have healthy relationships and friendships like we are. Until then, I'll prefer hanging out with a few close friends and some girls or my Sunday morning canyon drives to giant parties.

Been 14 years since I graduated and yeah it sure seemed like high school was like that at the time.
Thing is, looking back, it really wasn't. For one thing, about half of a HS kids glory stories are BS. A lot of what you hear didn't really happen. People say whatever to fit in. Another thing is that the people who do those things are the ones who act out in general. They're a lot more noticeable in general. Most kids fly under the radar and if you're not friends with them you just never really notice what they're up to because it's not all that interesting, strange, illegal, or dangerous.
Just keep your shit straight and the rest of those kids just sorta disappear from your life eventually.

Well, think about it like this. 16 year olds having sex is never a good idea. My school was known for its high concentration of STDs. Also, they think they won't get pregnant either, which also happens as it turns out.
As for drugs and alcohol, that is always going to happen in high school. I didn't do either. I still don't do either, and being in college I pretty much feel like I am the only person that doesn't drink. Good parts: You save money not buying either(my friend like 300 dollars on beer last month or something) and you know what you are doing at all times, what is so bad about that. I say don't worry about it, don't fall into peer pressure!!

+1 to picking friends wisely. My second semester is miles better than my first because I dumped the group of friends I was hanging out with when I realized they were egotistic backstabbing sons-of-bitches and one day just walked up and sat down at the second "popular" table that housed the bookworms, senior class president, etc.
This last semester has been fantastic. Made a lot of good friends, made some memories, and my grades got significantly better.

I had a pretty similar experience in high school, minus the pregnancies. I'll admit that I did my fair share of what you mentioned above, and for the most part it was a huge waste of money. I'm a freshman in college now, and I've noticed that a bunch of people grow out of that pretty quickly, but the majority that I have seen don't. Going to a private school didn't help either, or at least not as much as I had expected. What did do was make sure my friends had access to better alcohol, so that was a plus. My advice would be just not to give in to peer pressure and be friends with kids you think will support your decision not to partake. Late junior year/early senior year, I stopped doing a lot of that stuff and my grades got a lot better. Luckily my friends didn't hive me too much shit for putting work first, but I know a lot of people catch flack. That doesn't mean I wasn't around it... My friends were still the same people.
You have your car, which is a great way to feel more independent and have a lot of fun. Looking back, I actually slowed way down with the less-than-responisble activities once I got my car, so keep that as a focus and get your hands dirty working with it. Thats almost as fun as driving it! All in all, be smart and be yourself through high school. Sometimes thats harder than it sounds but you'll look back with fonder memories. I know I do.

Where abouts are you located (Don't give the exact, but something helpful).
In short though, yea its always been at least sort of like that. Demographics matter more for some bits of it.
I was an adventurer, so I tried just about anything merely for the adventure, had a few rough-ish times. I worked full time through most of HS too, and then went to the bars with my older friends a lot and went to school still intoxicated and slept through the first half of the day (in class). I got away with it too, because I was always the "smart" kid and teachers enabled me. I could skip school for a week, and be counted present every day because, as one teacher in particular told me "You won't do this again, right". I nodded my head, and did it again.
Maybe I got lucky, I could show up for a class on test days, scan the textbook waiting for the class to start, and ace the tests. Never did homework, geez I was a waste of high school experience! Between good test scores, summer school and lenient teachers I graduated with something like a 1.87 GPA! Go me!
In Junior high we had some pregnant girls, but a lot of that goes back to demographics. Good ol' abstinence only school districts, always a colossal failure. I was not in that group of young parents though.
In hindsight, I am not upset I was me. Sure I almost killed myself doing stupid stuff. I wish I would have gone to college after highschool, instead of returning now to get a degree.
I think you will get to a phase where you try at least some of those things, and I think thats OK. That is what people do when they are young, and you sort of have to experience some of it to grow out of it. Just don't be stupid. Don't drink and drive and don't let friends do it. Don't drink until you get alcohol poisoning, wear a rubber...
And if you are racing you car, keep it on the track!
I may have rambled a bit, and I left out plenty of bits and details... But did it help with the question?

Thats pretty much how I feel. People in high school shouldn't really be doing stuff like this constantly. I know college is a lot of "experimenting" and the frats and so on. And thats okay. I just don't think 16 year olds should be getting wasted and high every week. Its not that I have a problem with drinking; Im around alcohol. My parents are in no way alcoholics but they have a drink every once in a while. My dad is a bar manager so every other night he is in the nightclub around it and always talking about it. I'm fine with that stuff when you are old enough (or close to old enough) to handle it.
I dont want to fuck up high school. Especially now that Im working with a big company with so much room to grow. Its a company that many of the managers (who make 6 figures) started in HS (like me) and never went to college, just worked their way up. I hope to be like them someday. I want a good job like that. Im hoping at least.

Believe me, people will notice that you have more self control than others, and that is a huge asset to people who know what they are dealing with (motivated people that didn't need college and made it anyway). You will be fine, just use your judgement. And, if it makes you feel better, just know the kids parting hard now, will be paying for it for a very long time if they don't get their shit together. HS is primarily about getting a good work ethic and figuring out right from wrong.

Im going to be a junior next year, and in my county, that is when you can really start choosing the classes, not being forced into them. The first two years are mixed with the good and the bad.
Next year Im taking DE US History (college course that give college credits) AP Psychology, Pre calc/ Trigonometry (usually a senior or higher class), AP English, physics honors, and so on. Im trying to stay on the more academic path. I think I've done a decent job so far of finding good real friends. Then I have the kids I talk to who do all the stuff that I never talk to outside of school.

I am a Sophomore, attending a really good high school in Redmond WA, a place where about 65% of people who work make at least double the GDP of the US. From what I see, a good number of teens have at least experimented with substances (Alcohol, Weed)
let me start off by saying "I have never done anything that might be illegal without my parents consent." No, I do not smoke pot. I have friends who do, and most of them don't brag about it. It's not a topic of discussion among people in my school for some reason. I guess it's at the point where everyone knows that a majority of people do it (Personally, I know a guy who can "hook me up with weed and acid" and another guy who can "hook me up with "weed or molly"). Since it's the Status Quo, nobody really cares anymore. same goes for parties. they do happen, but it stays between the people who attended (this is disregarding rumors etc.) In the case someone get's "Hazed" and shows up to school wasted, they'll probably be caught and sent home eventually.
The weird thing about RHS (Redmond High) is the absence of the "Cliques". You'd think that the "dumb jocks" never intermingle with the "Nerd Herd". This is the opposite of the norm, and everybody is on chill terms with everybody. This contributes greatly to how people behave/react to stuff like this.
The sex part doesn't surprise me, as it happens here as well, but there are no pregnant teens in my school. at all. whatsoever. And this is a 2,300-ish student school. Personally, I haven't gotten that far with any of my relationships yet, and intend to keep it that way (Although on the Drama State trip, I did have a girl grind on me, and then I proceeded to make out with her for like the next hour or so straight. (Note: I met this girl at 11:30AM and had gotten to the "making out grinding dancing" phase by 10PM))
So yeah, High school! Wooooo! Funnnn!

sounds about the same as the late 90's in Australia.
Though we would at least go home if we wanted to bang, the toilets were gross. I occasionally smoked weed, it was decriminalized back then. Can't be bothered these days.
I lost more mates to stupid, avoidable car accidents though.

The sex stuff doesn't bother me as much; I understand being a senior and being 17/18 when it is technically legal and every once in a while. But the pot, which isn't at all legalized in my state, is what really bothers me.
Im trying to stay in that common sense/smarter bracket, but it isn't easy.

To answer: it depends on the weed. Think of it as a range of car models.
There's the cheap, stanky stuff (BMW 528i) and then you work your way up to the home grown, cared for, totally amazingsauce one (BMW M5 W/performance pack)
I have not tried it personally, but I know people. It's better than cigarettes at least.

Very good point. It was insane over Spring Break, when looking at the police mug shots (something I do a lot for some reason) how many kids I knew and were arrested for public intoxication or possession.
I want to do something with my life. I want to be a manager of a company and make decent money. I hope to avoid all the shit that happens and so far Ive been good at it. But in the same sense, my life is rather quiet and lonely. I really leave my house to just drive or go to work. I don't ever party or do that stuff. I want to change that somehow without getting into the dumb stuff.
I always wonder what these kids will become. I want to go to my reunions in 20+ years and see what happened to who.I really hope Facebook doesn't die soon so I can see what happens to people I know

I went to high school in suburbia, and I tried my best to get laid before I graduated. The girls wouldnt give it up. I'd say less than 10% of people in my school were having sex, or smoking weed. Even couples that dated for over a year weren't doing it in most cases. Now I hear all these stories about lesbian action in the bathrooms, girls giving blowjobs in the cafeteria, teachers having sex with students.. I kind of wish my school had more of that. There was a small group of pot heads, and a handful of whores but that was it. There were parties with alcohol, but nothing exciting ever happened besides a fight here and there.

Since I went to a small Catholic HS where the community is tight-knit and the campus ministry holds a lot of sway, my experience wasn't anywhere near as bad as what you describe. Granted, I wasn't very social when I was in high school (and that hasn't changed much in the two years since I graduated), so I'm sure there was more going on than I think.
Kids were busted a few times for weed - once in a gym locker room, another during one of the occasional searches by the local PD that involved them going through everyone's lockers and having a huge dog sniff at our backpacks. Some students had sex (and from what I've heard, it was pretty bad sex LOL) - one girl had a pregnancy scare, another girl had an abortion (this was before my time, though), and another one dropped out a few weeks before graduation (I think she did get knocked up).
I never participated in any of it and still haven't since I am, again, a bit of a Socially Awkward Penguin. It made my freshman year of college a bit of a shock for me when I had to deal with a roommate who loved weed and smoked any drug he could get his hands on - since he usually had several friends and floor mates over, the results ranged from hilarious to ridiculously annoying.

No, but do keep in mind that I my background comes from a backass high school in a small town in a forgotten corner of Brazil. Things were relatively calm back then, which is odd considering my school was a veritable free for all, but that might have more to do with cultural differences between Brazil and the US than with anything else.
High School in the US seems to be a huge deal, with its own rituals, practices and rites of passage, while down here it's just... school. It's the same shit that came before, nobody is really anybody in High School, and nobody has ever given half a crap about High school, plus being 16 years old gives you exactly jack rights in Brazil. No driving, no drinking, no smoking, you're just kind of a large-ish kid. Also, substance abuse isn't really a thing down here either, regardless of age. Bragging about getting drunk or stoned will only make you look like an idiot, and you won't find people high on painkillers and medicine either.

Yeah it really sucks. It wasn't as bad in my school as I live in Northern Virginia, and the nice part of it too. Unfortunately it's just a part of high school. I'll admit I wasn't the perfect kid, when I was a freshmen and my brother was a senior I'd convince him to let me drive us home and that became the Friday tradition (My dad taught me to drive in the 7th grade, I was a good driver by my freshmen year). I lived really close to the school so it was mostly neighborhood driving, never above 25 MPH, which still doesn't make it okay. I also messed around a couple times with marijuana, never a regular thing. Maybe 3 times throughout my freshmen year on "special occasions".
As you can tell from me being a member on Oppo, I'm into cars. In my freshmen year my love for cars blossomed. When I wasn't playing sports or hanging out with my friends, I was looking for a job so I could buy myself an E39 M5. Finding a job at 15 in suburban NoVa wasn't easy. I didn't want my parents to pay for my car, and I couldn't find a job that would hire me at 15, so I had to wait until my sophmore year. Anyways, my freshmen year was spent thinking about how dumb some people in my school were and how poor the decisions they made were. I also started to take my love for cars seriously, and started to learn EVERYTHING I could about them.
Moral of the story, High school is a fun time. You just gotta hang out with people who think like you, and trust me, there's a lot of people who think like you.

Unfortunately kids tend to make poor decisions. I made a bunch in high school, but fortunately they were things I could recover from.
My brother is only two years younger than I am, and he also made poor decisions, but he also did pot in a very irresponsible manner. He didn't finish college, and is still living at home with mom and dad.
Please note that you don't have to do things if you don't want (like drugs). If you do, be responsible, for fucks' sake. If you want to drink, don't get behind the wheel of a car. If you want to have sex with a hookup, use a fucking condom. If you want to drive fast, do it on a closed course with a helmet.

Class of 2000 here. Honestly it sounds like the more things change, the more they stay the same. Maybe not so much the pregnancy thing but smoking in the bathroom, drinking and the pot, been around since before me. I remember two kids got caught fucking under the stairwell when I was in 9th grade.
Now what I'm going to say will probably be hard for you to process (I know because I received the same advice when I was your age but didn't get it) but socially, high school means nothing. Your only goal should be getting into college, fuck everything else because none of it matters. Seriously, college is where you are going to have some of the best experiences of your life. You just have to remember that what ever you do carries consequences.
Now I'm not going to sit here and tell you not to do drugs because I did them in college, just don't do any of the hard shit (heroin, coke ect...) I've seen far too many people destroy their lives with that shit. So stay smart and enjoy yourself, because being an adult and paying bills suck big time.

I can approach that with a general, meh. My high school was an odd microcosm that had a bit of everything...and that included pregnant students. Did I do most of the things you mentioned, yep. Especially my senior year, spent freshman-junior year dating the same girl, and when that ended my senior year I let a little more loose.
That being said, I also was in honors/AP/dual enrollment classes, had a job, ran the high school auditorium (which more or less was like a 15-50 hour a week job), was active in multiple extracurriculars, got into both of the Big Ten undergrad business programs I applied to, and survived it all in one piece. Basically I was the kid who you didn't expect to do any of that stuff, and no one really knew I did.
So..yeah, it's always been that way. Yours sounds a little different...I'm from the days before text messaging, social media, and actually calling people to hang out....which I think probably makes a significant difference between then and now.

Its similar at my school, I can get some home grown weed from a kid in my science class or brownies from a kid outside my history class. Yet in my school, we still have all the cliques. The sports kids stay together, the band geeks stay together, the smart stay together. There is virtually no cross-over which makes it kind of weird since you end up with like 6 different insane parties going on every weekend with the different groups.
My school is right around 2400 students and theres a good amount of pregnancy.
Ive had a GF before. We were together for nearly 6 months. Its a great story, I met her at the New York International Auto Show, but we never went full on to sex. We both agreed it wasn't worth it at all.

Why do you want to change that? I never partied, and I turned out fine. I don't think you're missing anything, even if it may seem that way to you now. Trust me, keep doing your thing and you'll be better off for it. Obviously you should broaden your horizons every now and then, but only in a positive way. Find opportunities volunteering at museums, for example. I give tours at the local air museum, it's incredibly fun and rewarding.
I've been removed from high school for 7 years now. I don't really talk to anyone I knew in high school, but I've seen what's happened to some friends. Honestly most kids turn out alright, but I've known some people who are still trying to finish school or find any job better than minimum wage. That doesn't matter though, there's no point in measuring your life against others. Ultimately I'm doing well enough for myself, and that's all that matters.

Help? Help with what? I smoked it because I enjoyed the way it made me feel—mellow, happy, funny, calm. I never smoked to "escape" from my problems. It was also a very social thing. Interestingly, my older brother and I were never very close until we started smoking pot together. The thing about it being social, though, is different in different situations. You can meet new people and hang out with new people when you smoke, but my best times were hanging out with good friends, talking, laughing, listening to music. Basically just being . We never drove around and did stupid things. We just enjoyed each other's company. The trick, I believe, is finding good people who share your interests—and your values, whatever that means—and avoid the people who make you uncomfortable. Realize that it's okay to walk away from a situation that doesn't feel right. Don't do things to fit in with others, find others who fit in with you.
BTW, I don't smoke any more. I gave it up about 25 years ago because my wife (fiancée at the time) asked me to. I wouldn't mind having a hit or two now that I'm in my forties, but as long as it's illegal I've got too much to lose by getting busted. It's not worth it.
I came across this article a few years ago, and I bookmarked it so I could show it to my kids when they're a bit older. It's really quite good, and you may find it interesting. A letter to my daughters about weed by Dan Shapiro.

You were a great help. Im in a pretty wealthy area of SW Florida; just south of Sarasota. We have a higher than median income and a high median age (68) so just a nice rich retirement community. Im a lot like that, really lazy, working a lot, and have teachers that like me a lot. My trick is to get on their good side early on, liek the first month, then I can start sliding and its okay. I could miss a day or two, and be fine. Id get free 100s and work I never did and always got bonuses on my tests. Grades aren't problem. I guess Im okay with a bit of experimenting. I understand that being young means you should do that, and I can see myself trying a sip here or there. But I dont ever want to end up blackout drunk on the side of the road or in a prison cell. I never really want to touch weed. Im okay with the sex when older (many seniors are 17 or 18 and technically its allowed) I just don't see the point in not doing anything to try and prevent pregnancy. That's be my first goal is to take as many factors out as possible.
