Yes, but notice he was not named "World Athlete of the Year."

I have no respect for drivers who don't build their own cars.

I have no respect for musicians who don't build their own instruments, nor astronauts who don't build their own space ships. Don't even get me started on pilots flying an airplane that wasn't built in their own garage, those filthy casuals :p

Great point, that is a distinction I didn't really make when first posting this. Gonna go ahead and blame it on the pain meds. lol

So essentially every professional driver in the world? Building and racing cars are two very different things, especially when it comes to making it your profession. Also, F1 drivers are highly involved in the tuning and development of the cars. Don't get me wrong, I think building your own car is the way to go (especially if you're just making your DD a weekend warrior or building a project amateur race car). But this is just such an ignorant statement. The number of people involved in building, developing, and perfecting goes far beyond (but still includes) the driver.

it's not my fault they've muddied the waters. racers used to build their stuff. before ingenuity was outlawed.

Go back to Le Mans racing in the 50s this same sort of race team structure was used. If you're referring to the beginnings of stock car racing where a bunch of moonshiners decided to race their jalopies around, then yes drivers used to be the sole builders of their cars. There's so much that goes into a Formula 1 car that I would say it is nearly impossible for 1 person to build an actual competitive car on their own. It's not muddying the waters, it's evolution to gather the best minds to create better cars. Ingenuity is the name of the game! Look at how F1 cars were in the 70s! The teams bent every rule they could to develop a faster/better car. Even in the modern day, look at the controversy over Vettel's car last year and the rumors of a "secret technology" in it. The ingenuity is still there, and I can guarantee that the drivers are still involved in the build/tuning/development of the car.

I wasn't referring specifically to f1. from karts on up, a regular joe will have a difficult time building a competitive car. ingenuity was the ground-effect lotus's that were outlawed, the suction'd chaparral's, the sohc ford's. come up with a better idea & be outlawed. more 'powerful' teams will have your stuff outlawed until they can figure out how to use your idea. pretty soon racing will be too dangerous to use people and the cars will be drone piloted by video-gaming 8 year-olds. that's what slotcars used to be for, then when you wanted to feel the g's, you moved up & on.

racing is too safe, bring back the boardtracks with 100hp bicycles, and leather helmets. open the rules to class things by displacement & size of contact patch, and let the homebuilts run. they might not finish at first, but the evolution of the cars would be much more interesting.

the drivers are very talented. they know which tire needs half a pound more pressure, they can tell the engineers if it needs more/less over/understeer. but somewhere along the line they quit busting knuckles & getting their hands dirty. small town dirt tracks have some of the most beautiful examples of racing. you can have 6 cars coming out of turn 4 close enough to throw a blanket over all of them, and it's not always the same 6 every week.

wow, I kinda jumbled a bunch of thoughts there, and it's not letting me edit it into sounding less spaztic...but i'm okay with that. i'm no writer, i'm a builder. and I think the blueprints I've laid down give a somewhat decent idea of the direction I was going. no, I don't care for the drivers, I care more for the engineers who force the sport to take leaps, especially if they build something awesome enough to get outlawed.
