So a friend told me about an abandoned 67 mustang coupe that has been on property his boss owns since 1992, the doors are unlocked and the keys left on the dash. The condition of the car is incredible and the only issues are missing hubcaps, dirt filled engine bay, and a flat tire. Does anyone here know what the laws are (in Colorado) regarding this? I assume I can't just go pick it up but I have no idea other than that.

(Edit) I spoke to the owner of the property the car is parked on and the car has no plates, nor has a owner ever contacted him. He said I could come pick up the car whenever as it runs and drives but it looks like there is no way to get a title in my name or to insure it

Check with your DMV. Sometimes you can file for a new title for an abandoned vehicle.

First, check the VIN! This will let you know of any issues. Then usually (I'm going off of IL laws) you can just go for a replacement title with a bill of sale.

The property owner will need to contact a county sheriff first. Have them run the VIN and check for liens or reports of it being stolen. Then there will be a 30-60 day period where the vehicle will be "advertised" for the owner to come up and lay claim. If that doesn't happen, the property owner can file for a bonded title (which it will be required to hold for I think 2 years), and then it can be held or sold from that point on. IANAL, some information may not be completely factual.

Call the sheriff's office. They'll have a lot more info

I understand you need to contact the property owner about the vehicle, and must make an attempt to find the rightful owner; maybe a local ad, or a search at the DMV. The last thing you want is for your new project car to actually have been stolen years ago. Assuming the title is long gone, you'll needed to get a bonded title. Check out this link for more info on getting a title .

After looking a bit, found 2 things that might help;

From the Colorado state website

From ehow.com

Pretty much it looks like the easiest way to do it, would be notify the police about it, and they will try to find the owner, shouldn't have to be towed since it is on private property. They will check to make sure it isn't stolen, and after an amount of time if it isn't stolen or claimed the owner of the property would be able to file paperwork to get a title for an abandoned vehicle.

If Forza Horizon is a realistic portrayal of Colorado law, you should just be able to take it.

Always glad to help a fellow Coloradoan. To your edit: If you can talk the property owner into having a sheriff come out and do a VIN check (it's gratis), that'll put you on the fast track to getting it titled in your name ;)

Once you get the DMV stuff sorted, check for rust! Pull the carpet (gently, if it's in good condition) to check the floors, check the frame rails, etc.
