I've recently started some older classics, and tonight's selection was Citizen Kane. I thought it lived up to its hype (though I still think Vertigo is a better movie), but I had a question which I couldn't seem to find an answer to anywhere else. The investigation into what Kane's dying word meant was led by Jerry Thompson, a reporter for an unnamed newspaper. However, throughout the entire movie, his face is always obscured, with either his back to the camera, or a shadow masking it. Why do you think that is?
Also, If you've got any other suggestions for movies to watch, they'd be more than welcome!

Last week my wife and I started watching all of the movies on the AFI top 100 list . http://www.afi.com/100years/movie… There are two lists, we cross referenced the two to make sure we get them all. It's about 122 movies in all. I think we've watched about 10 or 12 so far. We are watching grapes of wrath right now. All of the movies we have watched have been on Netflix. My favorite so far is The Apartment I think. Has Jack Lemmon in it. Really good movie.
Having a list to work off of really makes picking a movie on Netflix a lot easier.

1935 — Mutiny On The Bounty
I'm not a movie buff. But one night a good friend of mine was hanging out when a huge snow storm hit and we had to stay in just watch TV. This movie came on and it was an experience man, let me tell you. Big black dudes from Africa with chicken bones through their noses. Call it a hunch, but I don't think these were professional actors living in Hollywood in 1935. They plucked some tribal motherfuckers out of the jungle for this movie, and watching it is like getting into a time machine. Nuts shit, man.

Often wondered that myself. Little seems to be known of the reasoning behind it. Let us know if you find any reason.

I have a list that I'm going off of, most of them are probably on the top 100! My favorite so far is probably Dr. Strangelove, It's absolutely hilarious and a great movie.

I like the oldies too. Off the top of my head(and I'm sure a few of them are on the list) my faves are:
African Queen (K. Hepburn, Bogart )
It Happened One Night (Gable, Colbert)
Charade (Grant, A. Hepburn)
To Catch a Thief (Grant, Kelly)

I was never sure about that as well. From what I've read, Welles wanted to confuse the hell out of people.
Some of my favorites:
My favorite filmmaker hands down. Everyone knows who Chaplin is, but until you watch one of his movies you just think he's some slapstick comedian. This clip from the 1971 of him receiving an honorary Oscar pretty much sums him up better than I could.

Fritz Lang's masterpiece. Until recently almost an hour worth of this movie was missing. Now almost complete it is a sight to behold.
Casablanca and Maltese Falcon are wonderful films, but I could watch this movie all day.
The best Hitchcock movie someone else made.
The best Steve Mcqueen movie. EVER. Also one of the best movies ever.
Dat 65mm.
My favorite of Kurosawa's films It is his version of "Macbeth".

I'm not sure Soylent Green could be said to be a classic, but in my mind it is. So I'd recommend that one.

Strangelove was the first movie we watched on the list. It is a good movie. I don't usually go for movies that are based around military type situations. Not sure why, maybe it was from watching so many with my grandpa when I was a kid. But I really liked it. My wife didn't really like it, but I think she missed the historical context of the situation. Also , I don't think she gets Peter Sellers.
What was the criteria for the list you're working from? How did you select the movies, or was it a list that was already put together. I noticed that there were far too many of the AFI movies that I should have seen but haven't yet.

It's really just movies that sound interesting to me, most of them just happen to be older movies.

I watched it a few days ago actually! I liked it and I thought it was really interesting, if a bit 70s cliche. I think if a decent director remade it today, it would be fantastic!
