This would be a perfect daily for the time being then turn into a project car towards the end of the summer... but the Volvo isn't quite in condition to sell it quite yet, and that would have to happen first. Anyone want a $1300 Volvo 244 that needs brakes before it's drivable?

Perfect daily? The thing sounds like it's a Lego kit lol. Some assembly will definitely be required before it's daily-able.

Talk you out of it?
Uh, it's not a wagon? Or brown? Or diesel?
You're really coming to the wrong place to be talked out of a Miata.

I think you can do better for not much more money

Dude, that thing is BEAT. Look at the body gaps along the hood/headlights, its hiding more (crash damage? Rust? Bondo? I'd say yes). 200k miles, and the engine is in pieces.

This is the high end of what I want to pay for one that is going to be a project chassis....

But for a project chassis that is going to be hacked apart down the road, those things don't matter!

Assembly is easy! As long as I could whip it to school long enough for me to get the rest of the project lined up I'd be happy.

Okay, let's get something straight here. There are two ways of looking at this car. So let's break it down.
If you buy this car expecting it to be a daily driver - AVOID. The "coolant hose burst" problem could be a cover, it could be a lie, it could be only part of what happened. So now EVERYTHING is taken apart AND the car is in primer? Mad sketch, yo.
If you buy this car wanting a cheap miata weekender/spec miata project? - CONSIDER. If it doesn't have to be super pretty, you could easily strip the nicer parts of the interior to make some money back and make it into an awesome little track car for cheap.

I've been wanting to do a miata project for a while, and should have the motor at the end of summer, so if it's put-back-togetherable until then, awesome. Worst case... tranny, non-broken engine stuff, interior should definitely make up most of that cost.

NA Miata with a turbo and minor cosmetic damage, $1200. The wheels are rare 1995 M Edition BBS 15" worth at least 600$ on their own that you can sell instantly. One of the local Miata group members just bought it and plans on fixing it and rocking out.

Far away, and even more than I want to pay for one, I really don't care about drivetrain condition(it'll all be going away eventually anyways).

If you're going to treat it like a project, then it's more reasonable. I'd still offer much less

I emailed the dude, What kind of price do you think would be more reasonable? That's the FIRST AND ONLY sub $1k miata within 300 miles I've seen in the last 3 months of looking.

Maybe start at $750 and then meet him somewhere in the middle? What were you thinking?

I'm pretty confident I could get $1400 out of the volvo, which would mean if I can get that for $800 I can get it, register it, and have a little money for incidentals while getting it running.

Yeah that could work to make it drive-able. 200k makes me nervous though. Good luck with it and keep us posted!

Of course they matter, they're indications of the condition of the chassis (beat!). And if you're planning to drive it as a daily, you're taking a big leap of faith about the true working order of the drive train.

Time, space, & $
That's what it all comes down to.
I have passed up a few projects because I didn't have 1 or 2 of the credentials. Space is a big one for me as garage is packed already, & not allowed cars without current tags in driveway.
On the other hand if it feels good, do it. That is how I got 2 of my projects. Good luck.

I've seen enough build threads where that "$500" CR-X turns out to have large chunks of frame rust hiding under the plastic and awful hack-job wiring. If that doesn't scare you, go on ahead. You can probably make back a few hundred bucks parting it out.

Down the road it would be getting caged/stripped/etc so stuff like that really isn't that big of a deal as long as it will hold together for a few months of driving around town.

Stripped 1.8 blocks seem to be going for ~$400 on eBay... how could this possibly go wrong?!

The gaps on the hood/head lamp area is an easy fix, just need to push/pull on the barn doors and that is fixed. The interior leaves much to be desired, but he could probably end up selling those wheels for what they are asking for the price of the car. . .

I'd pass, the fact of the overheating necesitating a tear down, I'd say that there is significant risk that that head is warped. Miatas are very sensitive to overheating, and it was most likely a CAS O-ring leak on to the heater core hoses that caused the leak. Really those wheels are probably worth a good $600 and the LSD is probably worth another $4-500 if you go the part out route. I'd still be wary of this car if you need to have it put together right away and driving. If you do get it, pull that head off and put a new head gasket on there and send the head out to a machine shop to get re-built and then motor on for another 200,000 miles. That interior is really rough though. I dunno, if you expand your search you can probably find a much better car for not too much more money.
