This series only goes to 1968, but would continue all the way until 1993, the last year of the completely separate (not recessed) grille, that was attached directly to the hood. The W140 of 1992 was the first to recess the grille and move the hood ornament to the hood itself. The W202 of 1994 also adopted the recessed grille, as did the face lifted W124 of 1994.
Although Mercedes has recently begun to make the grilles larger and more prominent, the still don't have the ornament on them, and are no longer attached to the hood.

That's an interesting picture, would be cool if they continued it, but that marked the end of that kind of grill.

For me, driving a merc without a hood ornaments it's akward.
Simply because i like it. Some say it helps you aim.

I always thought this to be a proper Benz so maybe rephrase it again (something with AMG?):
