But my "buddy" who has fallen in love with the ZHP and decided to make it his mission to denounce any and all rice (even though he still drives a Mazda) has really reinforced all the negative stereotypes to the point that it would make it really hard for me to seriously consider one.

That is beautiful. Love the E36. And I was actually considering picking up a CPO 128i. But it's getting harder everyday.

So your "buddy" is an asshole and now you won't buy a car brand because of it? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

1) Your limited sampling of BMW owners shouldn't lead you to believe that they're all elitist douches.

2) Even if all BMW owners were elitist douches, what's that have to do with the car? You don't have to hang out with other BMW owners when you buy one. I haven't met a Ferrari owner who wasn't a complete d-bag (looking at you, DeMuro), doesn't mean I'll never buy a Ferrari.

I'm not the first guy to admit this, yeah a lot of BMW "enthusiasts" are douches. Still, the forums are crazily active. Great community if you can handle the occasional douche.

The 1 series doesn't attract that many douches, because the douches would rather be in an E92 (because saying you own a 335i sounds a lot better than saying you own a 135i to most douches) or even an E46 M3.

Of course I'm gonna push the BMW on you, feel free to disregard this hahaha.

Limited? Dude. It's Northern Virginia. I can't throw a rock without hitting a BMW driver. 2 of them I've ever met have turned our to be decent people. And to be honest, it was just on my list. It wasn't a decided fact. This just makes it harder because what you hear is mostly true, and who wants to be associated with that? I'd rather be called a ricer (which I'm not even, but apparently Honda=ricer).

Well, the 128i isn't off the table completely. His actions honestly are influencing our friendship than it is my selection of cars. Just makes it hard to see one of my friends become one of "those" guys.

My main issue with BMW - and German cars in general - is the engineering snobbery of some of their fans. I wouldn't let it keep me from driving one myself, and I know there are plenty of completely reasonable German car enthusiasts out there, but as someone who drives a French car - prime targets of their disdain - the arsery of a few really bugs me.

Well, the problem I've seemed to encounter with most of them is a confusion between quality and reliability, or an obvious gravitation to quality over reliability. As if having a car that's nice, but continuously breaks down is some badge of honor.

Don't worry, the "feeling" will go away once he either 1) buys the ZHP, gets flamed a little bit on a forum, realizes some owners are douches and he doesn't want to be that guy. or 2) doesn't buy a ZHP and realizes he still drives a Mazda.

A friend of mine was exactly the same. Except it wasn't a good BMW. It was an E36 318i in sea foam green (one of the ugliest bmw factory colors). He bought it already modded, it had M3 side skirts, front/rear bumpers, and some no name replica wheels. One day a bunch of us met up to go for a cruise, as one of our buddies just picked up a new STI. Long story short, E36 guy parked really close to STI guy and told him he should be really careful next time he parks, so he doesn't fuck up the E36. STI guy then politely reminded him that the bbs reps he just put on his car were worth more than the E36, and he neeeever acted like a douche again.

The kid had a ZHPMafia account before he'd even driven one. That's how he got his first test drive. I wouldn't e surprised if he blew the guy to get into the car. And we have an STI guy in the group. He used to own an RSX-S. So he's gettin pretty pissed about our buddy's new attitude too. I told him he should just trade in his Mazda for a 325i, he got offended because it was more or less calling him out for the badge snob he's become.

Haha I have a feeling he's gonna overpay for a mediocre condition ZHP. The owners know what they have, and if you don't know your stuff or even seem like it they'll definitely shaft him on the price.

On the BMW forums there are 2 kinds of buyers: the one you give a big discount to because they know everything about the car and you know they'll treat it well and then there's the guy you just rape on price because your car is "rare".

Well, maybe I'm ignorant, but I looked it up and it seems to be 10 extra hp, new suspension, and some interior/exterior cosmetic upgrades. I just don't get how there's so much hype over these cars when there's the M3 which is better in every way.

Yes, this. Coworker bought a beat-up E46 and crows about German engineering, while he's had nearly his entire suspension replaced it chewed up a few sets of tires.

Complicated imported stuff is great when new, but it means it costs more when you have to replace it.

You know what the craziest thing is?

Half the time people spend M3 money on a ZHP. Let's say the purchase price is $11k, they'll spend $3k in mods easy. I've read more than enough ZHP builds to conclude that.

Seriously, if I had a budget of $14k I'd pick up an E46 M3 with 75k miles on it. If I needed 4 doors (a reason the ZHP sedan is so appealing) I'd buy an E39 M5. No point at all in spending a huge premium over a regular E46 when I could buy coilovers and cosmetic bits and make a regular E46 a better performer for much less.

Exactly!

A clean ZHP is too much money. It's cheaper to just buy an E46 M3 than get a ZHP and upgrade it.

I drove the E46 M3 to LA and back today. Damn. I'm sad it's going soon. It's so comfy for a sports car. It's fast yet soaks up bumps and has comfortable seats.

I really don't care how expensive an M3 (of any generation) is to maintain. There is no better deal than a used M3.

The maintenance costs of an M3 don't scare me, driving an M is just so fun. I would daily drive an M in a heartbeat if I could find the right one, which is the hard part haha. The want for an LCI E90 M3 has been so strong lately, I even test drove a Silverstone II M3 last week. 6MT, fully loaded, only 30k miles on it... They offered me a fair trade on my 328i, and almost had me hooked. I'll be completely honest, if it was $5k cheaper I would've bought it on the spot. If it was AW or interlagos blue on fox red/any type of brown, i would've gladly paid asking price.

Yeah, the G35C basically addresses most of the problems with the Z: NVH, interior crappiness and utter lack of practicality. At the same time though, it exacerbates a different problem (weight) and is slightly more "soft core." As weird as it is, i sort of enjoy being an obstinate car enthusiast who DD's an impractical sports car.

Plus i'm all about the emotional attachment. I intend to drive my car until it either becomes way way way too much trouble to deal with or (knock on wood) it gets totaled.

But yes, the 350Z community is pretty damn terrible. Maybe it will get better as the car ages, but i kind of doubt it. It has a long way to go before it's at all rare.

03/24/2014 at 21:04

Kinja'd!!!0

Haha that is awesome!!

It's so funny how sometimes I get pissed at my E90 (actually at myself) because it has a DCT and that makes it boring around town when I'm not driving hard. The DCT is fun in M mode at WOT but ho-hum when you're puttering around. A stick is way more fun for commuting around my house since traffic isn't bad.

But then other times I have to drive a lot in bad traffic and I fall back in love with the E90. My 6MT 911 is super fun around town. But it's the opposite of fun when I go to LA.

The DCT version of the E9X M3 was built for LA traffic. You just put it in auto mode and go. You're never starved for torque because the computer constantly shifts gears and keeps you in an optimal rev band. And instead of traffic pissing you off you get an aural delight every time you get a brief opening and step on it. The constant stop and go doesn't tax your left leg and you get to hear the engine go from that deep idle to high revs and back!

Kinja'd!!! AM3R > Manuél Ferrari

Kinja'd!!!1

Sometimes I still find myself kicking my own butt because I got an auto. I really should've held out for a manual, but at least now I get to find another fun (must be MT) car to play with. The E9x is a great platform, I wouldn't mind selling my E90 as picking up a 335is or an M3.

On the topic of your 911, the want for a 996/early 997 is so strong!!

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > AM3R
03/24/2014 at 21:17

Kinja'd!!!0

I am now convinced that the only solution is to have multiple cars. No car is perfect for all situations! And when you have multiple cars you never get bored of what you have. Having at least 2 is awesome.

Since your car is stick you should save up for a 997.2 with PDK! Even if it has the stupid gear shift toggles you can replace the steering wheel with one that has proper paddles.

03/24/2014 at 21:24

Kinja'd!!!0

My car is an auto :( I like the 997 plan but with a stick instead.

Ideally, I'd be completely satisfied with my E90 as a DD, a manual 996/997 as a DD whenever it isn't freezing cold or raining (I guess a spring/summer/early fall DD), and an older BMW like an E34 M5 (or any other fun bimmer I could tinker on during the weekend) that I could drive on the weekends and take to meets and C&C.

Crap I don't know as much about the Turbos as the other cars.

But I do know that the 996 Turbo and GT3 engines didn't have the IMS issue that the regular cars had. So the 996 is a rare line of cars where it's SAFER to get the fastest versions!

And that one looks sweet!

Since most 996 GT3s have been tracked to hell I would personally go for a 996 Turbo like the one you found or an early 997 C2S!

How much garage space do you have?

Kinja'd!!! AM3R > Manuél Ferrari
03/25/2014 at 19:47

Kinja'd!!!1

I have 2 spots, but I have a neighbor of mine (really nice guy) who's willing give me one of his spaces for free, so I guess I have 3 spaces. Then I have a large area where I can park at the end of a Culdesac.

I guess keeping the 328i is a good idea, it hasn't done me wrong! Maybe I can pick up some lightly used coilovers for it, get a set of light (probably Apex) wheels, and make it my fun DD/"beater". You really can never have too many cars, maybe I'll stop buying cars when I can't drive them all in a week haha!

Even better, I plan on starting a "hustle" soon. Nothing big and serious, just wrapping interior trim for people. Making ~$250 per job isn't too shabby for work that I somewhat enjoy doing. This is just something I can do on the weekends to put some more money in the toy (car) fund and speed up the process of getting that Porsche and E38.

Awesome! 2+1 spots is great.

And nice on the interior trim job!

Keeping the 328i is a good thing. The E38 will inhale fuel so it will be good to have the 328i for certain trips. Some drives are boring no matter which car you're in, so you may as well save money by using less fuel! And you probably don't want to put a ton of miles on the E38 as mileage-based maintenance and repairs will be more expensive than the same work on the 328i

If the interior trim work goes well maybe I can hook you and some other Oppo members up!

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > AM3R
03/25/2014 at 21:18

The E9X is such a good car. It gets SO much shit from people who love the E46 and think the E9X sucks. It definitely isn't as nimble as the E30-E46. But it is so damn usable on a day to day basis. I love my 911. But my E90 is my *best* car in that I can use it any given minute of any given day for any given task. And it can still go to the track on the weekend if I choose to use it there.

The F30 does not feel nearly as tight and fun as the E90. I want to keep my E90 M3 for at least 9 more years. By then the next M3 will have been out for at least a year or two. Maybe that one will be exciting to me if BMW evolves the electric power steering enough and makes the car feel more sporty.

Nice on the trim!

When my 328i is on it's last legs, I'll just move up to an M3. I still have a long way to go on my E90. I want to get another 50-60k out of it at the very least. I've started to warm up to the aesthetics of the F30, but my limited experience driving one isn't exactly positive.

Any E9x I have is NOT going to be a garage queen. I'll be driving it like they were intended to be driven.

I have an article that I'm writing up about the E9x chassis. Maybe we can collaborate on it as you are much more familiar with the M3 than I am.

Sounds like a fun collaboration! Sign me up!

Hmm maybe when your E90 is on it's last legs you can just do an engine and transmission swap. Maybe you can find a wrecked M3 with a good power train and do the swap. You can change the suspension and brakes yourself to be superior to the M3's components.

Kinja'd!!! AM3R > Manuél Ferrari

Kinja'd!!!1

That would be a fun swap to do. If I could get a good enough deal on the engine and transmission maybe I could even go FI and supercharge it. It would make one sweet autocross warrior/weekend backroads killer. If only I had a wagon! I could make another E91 M3. Now that is an investment. Remember that NPOCP E91 M3 that still had the 328i powerplant, and this was a 328i with 50k+ miles on it? I believe it sold in the mid $30's. That's M3 money for a M3 wagon lookalike. If the swap was complete with an engine/tranny and a full M3 interior, I bet you could *easily*ask for $45-55k depending on miles and options. Spend $15k buying an E91, spend $20k on a swap (just a random number), and enjoy the profit!

I'll be sure to get in touch with you when I'm closer to finishing the article.

Haha yeah you need to drive the E9X M3 a bit to see that it really doesn't need more HP. Other mods do it a lot better.

You should totally get a 6MT E93 M3 with the carbon fiber roof. That's the lightest E9X M3 you can get. You can take out the back seats and some of the sound insulation and it would be a great track car. It would be competitive with Porsches that cost more than it.

Costemically speaking, I'd probably just get some really light and wide wheels. Besides that I'd throw on some coilovers and a better flowing exhaust. Either install two recaros or do a rear seat delete. Most importantly I'd throw on some stainless steel brake lines and some track appropriate pads.

I'd be more than satisfied with just this.

I have mixed feelings about the liberty walk M3 widebody kit. It looks great, but I wouldn't be able to rock it as a DD. Mostly because it'll draw too much unwanted (read: cops) attention :D!

If I were to go for an LB kit, I'd definitely make the M3 my track car.

You've gotta get all your cars out for a photo shoot one day! Especially before you get rid of the E46!

But you could TOTALLY rock that car as a DD. Yes it would get attention from the cops but girls would love it too :D

Good idea, I need to take those photos!

The more I think about it, the better of an idea i think it is. Getting it wrapped in some racing livery and DD'ing a stripped M3 track car would be fulfilling a young teenage dream of mine haha!

You've gotta do it! Only good things happen when you mix Porsches and BMW's.

sooo nice

i just had a fun drive back to the office in the E90

i honestly can't decide if you'd be better off adding a 6MT 911 or a 6MT M3 to your garage

i can't decide which of my cars i like better. it's like being in love with 2 girls at the same time. that happened to me before and it was very confusing. same thing with these cars. every time i think i've picked my favorite i drive the other one and it reminds me how much i like it.

The only way I'll be able to decide which to get in a manual is A LOT of test drives. Or just get both haha! I will still have the 328i in an auto.

I feel your pain, that is a very confusing situation, one that I'd rather not remember haha!

On that office part, does driving the Porsche or the M3 to work in the morning "make your morning"? I'm not the biggest morning person, and I do enjoy the confront and performance of my 328i, but I'm still not the happiest guy at 6AM. One of my neighbors commutes in a E60 M5 and told me that he doesn't even need an alarm clock to wake up anymore, THATS how much he loves the drive to work every morning!

it was so confusing that i lost them both, haha

hmm

that is a hard answer

if you're just normal tired the porsche is kind of more exciting

but if you're so exhausted that life is just painful than the E9X M3 is better because it's more comfy. so it really depends...

Ah I don't see myself becoming a morning person anytime soon anyways. I'm fine with waking up early for a track day or a C&C, but you won't find me singing along to the radio at 5:30 AM in DC/NoVa traffic.

Gotta keep burning the early morning oil though, how else am I gonna get my dream garage!

I hate the mornings too if I have to get up too early.

No car can make that better. It just sucks.

Except maybe a classic Ferrari V12. That will be cool!

If I could afford to DD a classic Ferrari, I wouldn't be waking up early for work!
