I think most of us wish we could go buy an NA Miata and become a weekend racer, but for various reasons not every Jalop owns a Miata. Lack of testicular fortitude is my guess.
So build a fantasy car instead!
Budget: $10,000
Purpose: Auto-X/track
Rules: you don't get coil overs for free, and your grandmother didn't give you an RX-7. Be reasonable.
Don't need links pricing each part or anything, just keep it simple: car+parts list=roughly $10k.
Not a competition or anything, just curious as to what people would like to have for a 'budget' track car.

I'd take my wagon to the next level.
Starting point:
1986 Toyota Cressida Wagon
2.8L I6 5M-GE, front coilovers, rear springs/shocks/panhard rod
Spent so far: $5500
Remaining budget: $4500
Objective: Power and drifting
1UZ-FE Lexus V8 swap w/standalone ECU - $2000
Mustang 8.8 4-lug rear axle w/LSD - $1000
Hydro e-brake: $300
Uprated clutch, aluminum flywheel, poly motor/trans mounts: $1000
Now you have a RWD V8 powered drift missile that isn't a Volvo. Congrats.

I made fun of Miata owners when the question was raised about "what is a bachelor car". Daily driving a Miata takes way more hair product than I'm ever willing to buy and know what to even do with. As a track car it is the perfect grass roots racer with a ton of aftermarket.

Miata does make a great choice, just not my choice. I would lean towards a Fox body mustang. Lots of aftermarket, it's a hatch, it's something a little different. And cheap

I think i'd do the same. Notch not hatch for me though.

1990 Mazda Protege 4wd, GTR Transmission, 1.8L DOHC engine with a Holset turbo. Add Japanese protege bumpers and Escort GT side skirts. Throw a helical type rear differential in there too. Throw in fixed back MX-3 Recaro seats up front and call it a day. Then take the other 4,000 and get extra gearboxes.

hmmm
buy a older 1000CC super bike and track tht.
cheaper, faster, infinitly more badass, and the sound of those motors above 10,000 rpm is glorious
