When isn't the CEL on on a VW?

Actually getting a CEL that will turn off is a dealer added extra though

I thought the VW's also came with a small bit of electrical tape that you use to cover the light with.

Surprisingly enough, right now there is no CEL on mine. I had to force it for the picture because I didn't feel it was proper to celebrate such a milestone without the dash indicator that has played such a large role in the car's life.

I don't think mine is on in my vw bus either... however it hasn't ran in a year....

It's a MKIII Jetta, not new enough to be worth anything, not old enough to be particularly rare/interesting.

yes, it was a standard feature

Well that was negative. But still you have low miles on that thing, I have 102k on my '04 just for reference.

Sorry that came off as negative. I love the car, but it usually falls squarely into the "a face only a mother could love" realm.
And as far as the "not new enough to be worth anything" I'm basically quoting what the insurance company told me.
