The F1 season intro my copy of Top Gear Malaysia has features a F1 track in Sochi. Apparently it's going to be a street circuit. We will see how hard hitting those sanctions are...

break out the off road tyres F1, you can bet half the track will be unfinished

sadly, there is likely at least a portion of truth there :(

Speculation? Dude, they are racing there in October, it's in the calendar. The track is virtually ready to go.

virtually ready to go, jsut like the place was for the olympics.... 2 weeks after the olympics finished

An F1 track is not a city with huge stadiums built from ground up, and since it mostly uses the linking roads that are already there, there's not too much work to do. Reporters said that it was almost ready to race during the Olympics.

I don't trust reporters... something something fox news is terrible

Look, the track is on the calendar for 2014, it was announced years ago. If there isn't a war breaking out in the meantime, F1 is going there. Besides, we don't get Fox News on this side of the Atlantic, especially on the Eastern side of the continent.

Right now I'm thinking that either my sense of humour is underdeveloped, or this the least comprehensive comment I've ever received.

That would fit in with their philosophy of holding races in countries with dictatorships and gross human rights violations. Next year: the first annual NKGP will be held in Pyongyang. Prisoners are already being worked to death building the track and facilities.

The race will go as planned. By October, all the news hysteria about Ukraine will subside (it already did). The West will silently concede the loss of Crimea, just like in Georgia in 2008, and then move on. And besides, why should the Russian Formula 1 race be canceled when Ukrainian delegation was competing in Sochi Paralympics just a week ago? If they couldn't find the strength to boycott the Paralympics in Russia, why should F1?
I think people do not realize that in the end Russia is the country that matters internationally. Ukraine is still an insignificant country, with a shitty economy in the need of a bailout to the tune of 15 billions USD, shitty politics, populist, corrupt and inept demagogue politicians who are sponsored by greedy oligarchs, with always divided circus-style politics, and neo-fascists roaming in the streets right now with no respect for the law. This is the reality of Ukraine that has the aspirations to join EU some day innear future (yeah right). I am really tired of hearing of them all the time for the last 15 years. If Ukraine does not want to fall prey to Russia or the West or anyone else in future, first they should get their own house in order.

but what about the snow. Sochi hosted the WINTER olympics, F1 and snow are no combination

Sochi climate is very mild. It's actually warm enough to grow tea and citric plants around that area. As for Winter games, only the enclosed winter Olympic stadiums were in Sochi. All the skiing, snowboard, and sledge competitions were held up in the mountains something like 30-40 miles away from Sochi. The area is basically Russian California (or NorCal at least). The organizers of the Russian GP did complain that they would have preferred the GP to be held earlier in the season, to be closer to the Russian summer vacation season. Sochi is a well known as a summer resort in Russia.
