Apparently, the Wright Brothers demonstrated what would become the first military aircraft about a mile from where I am staying in Arlington, VA. The location was Fort Myer, which is right next to Arlington Cemetery. The first a variation related death in the "controlled, heavier than air flight" era happened during one of those tests when the Military Flyer had a prop failure and Orville and Lt. Selfridge crashed.

1908 article from the new york times. This is a very interesting read with eye witness reports and first hand info.

Completely unrelated to this, but you went to Le Mans last year right?

I remember you said your grandstand had no back wall so it got windy. Which grandstands do have back walls? I'm going this year, but I'll be commuting in the morning of the race like you did last year.

The Dunlop stand (T4) had a back wall and I think stands T17 on up to T34. You also want to make sure your seats are far enough back to be under the covered portion of the permanent stands. One thing to remember is seating is only really reserved for the few hours after the start and a few before the finish. At night you can go wherever. I thought

I thought there were 360 panos of the stands that you can look at somewhere. I will have to look around.
