This one of the pictures I submitted in my photo class for our assignment to shoot "old things." My teacher is a bit of a dick to everybody and is known for being a narrow-minded asshole. I give me my presentation giving the history behind my photos to the class. He tells me "Hey Bandit, I can't obviously tell if this wheel you shot is old or not. I'm going to have to deduct you some points." I was confused since I had already stated this is from a '65 MG. I responded "Um... Mr. [photo teach], how many car's do you see rolling around on wire wheels that aren't ghetto hoopties from the 80s? Think about it." He took minute to think about what just happened, he couldn't really believe a student just said something contradictory/boarder line asshole-ish to him. Eventually he nodded and and in a defeated tone said "That is true, good point. I guess I have to give you full credit." I haven't liked this teacher since he told me brown wasn't a color during the first week of his class. He teaches a photography class but we have never learned anything, monday he assigns some random photo assignment (this week was 50 pictures of brooms), tuesday-thursday he just sits at his computer, and every Friday he assigns a one page hand written summary of an article in an old photo magazine due at the end of the hour. I apologize for how this sounds, but I am the best photographer for the class and I feel especially bad for the other guys. We signed up to learn photography and he won't teach us. He is a useless waste of tax dollars.

Thanks! I'm quite proud of that one. Those are all pocket watches that use to belong to my great grandfather, they've lived a rough life.

I never seen a teacher being quite a dick like that. My photography teacher back in high school was a really laid back guy, and taught various other subjects as well.

Yeah, I honestly don't know how this guy still has a job. All he "teaches" is photography and he constantly has complaints about him submitted to administrators. He's been suspended for verbally abusing a student before too.

Those are some damn gorgeous pics I must say. I dabble in photography myself, but I tend to prefer landscape shots.
I would post photos I took of a brand new Kia Optima against the sunset, but my internet and Kinja are being enormous poops. Maybe I'll make an Oppo post about it later...

Thanks! I got my DSLR for christmas (and I live in Indiana) so I haven't really had an opportunity to go out and take many landscapes yet.

What are you hoping to learn from your photography class?
I don't know much and I am often wrong but this is my take on taking photography classes:
1. You will always learn more by pushing yourself, 50 photos of brooms with a DSLR isn't going to teach you much.
2. Exploit all and every resource they have at your school. Large format printer? Hog that shit at every chance. Don't have chances to use? Do it any way and ask for forgiveness afterwards. Same with dark rooms and whatever else they make available.
3. Photography courses are best for making connections in the industry. Fashion/product/editorial is all about knowing people and putting yourself out there. Skill is secondary, tertiary most often.
4. Enjoy it! Don't let a shitty teacher upset you.
Keep up the good work and get out there and shoot.

I once had a professor who was senile and just repeated the same lesson every class. We ended the semester pretty much only knowing how to open AutoCAD and draw a few lines.
