Hey guys
This morning I was driving to go put air in my real low tire. Well it then decided to come off the rim a bit before I could stop. So i changed the tire and put the donut on. Oh I should mention it's an 04 Wrx. So I put the spare on and had to get on the highway. I then noticed the abs light and brake light turned on. Everything seemed fine and I was hovering around 60 (which yes is probably way to fast for a donut). All of a sudden the car seemed to violently shake out of no where. I slowed down and it continued to do so. I could feel it in the pedal and the shifter. I down shifted and it almost felt like the gears were rattling around down there grinding. I immediately pull off and turned the car off. After much swearing, panicking, and contemplating i made the executive decision to fire her back up. She started up and felt good. I got back on the highway and took it even slower and it never happened again.
More background. I have a bad rear O2 sensor that is getting fixed tomorrow. I also have noticed the past two mornings in the really cold weather that after about a half hour of driving when i left off the gas my engine starts to whine a bit. About the same whining noise you hear when you downshift. After the day warms up a bit it doesn't happen again. This also did not happen this morning.
Also, I work for a school and they have an autotech dept. I had them check it out today and one of the instructors couldn't find anything weird. It ran fine, fluids looked good (transmission, differentials, etc). He is thinking that it could be something funky with the O2 sending crap to the ecu for some offhand reason. He thought the car looked good. I trust him, just want to know if the internet has experienced anything like this as I know nothing about cars.
If you are still with me, I appreciate your time. I am sure most of the aforementioned things are unrelated but I'd rather give too much info than not enough
Thanks!

Since the diameter of your donut is much smaller, it will be spinning at a faster rate than the other wheels. This will throw a speed mismatch to the ABS/traction control system. This is most likely the cause of the abs and brake lights.
I'm guessing that the shaking you felt had to do with the DCCD. Basically its a AWD limited slip differential. It was having a hard time compensating for the mismatch in wheel speeds might have messed with some of the gears in your diff.

60 MPH on a donut??? To be honest that was probably the problem. They are usually rated to 50 mph and not for expressway driving.

Oh wow that makes sense. In a weird way this puts me at ease. Now for the million dollar question, in your opinion, could I have caused long term damage to the rear diff? I'm sure there's really no way you can say one way or the other but is it possible?

As soon as I wrote it I thought how not smart it was this morning. I get stressed easily and I definitely was not in a rational thought process this morning. I was fortunate enough to never have a flat in about 7 years of driving, so donuts are a novel concept. My common sense comes and goes, and this morning i guess it was a "goes". I took the ride home very slow and will not make that mistake again

Yes, there could very well be long term damage. The owner's manual has very specific procedures for using the donut. I'm not 100% about an '04 WRX, but most Subaru models allow only to use the donut's on the rear and using a spare fuse to disable RWD.

I just looked, that's exactly what it says. I know what I am doing immediately

We all do stupid things once in a while.
My list of dubious accomplishments includes driving with the oil light on (mind you...to the nearest gas station...to get oil). It was pretty dumb I know now I could have totally ruined my car.
Live and learn....at least you lived!!

Ok well after reading the manual a few more times. It says for awd automatic trans except for turbo models. This part confuses me because I'm fairly certain there was a number of wrx's around the 02-04 years that came auto trans. I did some reading online and it sounds like the MT's have a mechanical diff and popping the fuse in will do nothing. So I'm SOL until I can get that tire fixed. Which will be tomorrow morning. I appreciate your advice and knowledge!

Amen to that. Hey that's funny I did the same thing one time! I also used to do e-brake slides in the snow in my old awd legacy while in gear until i was reprimanded by a smarter friend...and the list goes on

Check out your front axles. the CV Joints can go bad and make a god awful rattling. Relatively easy to replace and not even that expensive. took me ages to find my nasty shake, but that fixed it right away. (04 STi)

Ugh I hope it's not that! I just had both front axles and a ball joint replaced right before the winter
