So, I work for the federal government division of a large computer corporation (Can't say more than that - NDAs and all that jazz) , and I really do enjoy my job, a lot... However, a position has opened up with a competing federal contractor for a role that is /way/ closer to what I want to do, with the catch that it's a 6 hour drive away. I'd be leaving (most, but not all of) my social circle behind, but the opportunity, provided tomorrow's interview goes well, is a hell of a lot closer to what I want to be doing.

Make sure there isnt a noncompete agreement with your old company. Those can come back to bite you. Otherwise, I'd say go for it!

Sounds like you might have an excuse to take some long drives.

In my experience, friends come and go, typically even those whom you think are going to be your friends forever. But find the right career, and it will be a major part of you for decades. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't let social concerns get in the way of great career opportunity. Social circles always change and evolve, but career opportunities don't present themselves every day.

Do it.
Have you seen that new Air Force commercial? There's an astronaut and he's talking about how ever since he was a boy, things that flew through the air have captured his imagination, etc etc. Anyway, his quote at the end of the commercial is spot on, re: success. Something to the effect of:
"When life offers you opportunities, welcome that adventure, be bold, and step across that threshold."

I was talking to a buddy of mine about cars yesterday, he was asking me why I always buy old cars and all that stuff, why not get a new beige mobile, and I answered very simply, "There are 3 things you are going to spend the vast majority of your life in, in this order, your work, your home, and your car, if you are unhappy with any of those 3, you are going to be miserable." Do what makes you happy my friend, go for it.

If it were me, I'd be on the move. My last career move took me from Seattle to DC.

Go for it, but play nice with the current employer when you leave - you never know when you'll end up working alongside the same people again, even with the current location difference.
