I've recently bought an SUV and am purchasing a camper soon, two things I am far from acquainted with (tent camper, what can I say?). I've mildly perused the net to check out controller/wiring prices, but I'm not interested in doing the installation myself so I was wondering if anyone has any information on cost (everything, installed) and the best place to go for the installation (stereo shop, mechanic, RV dealer?).
Of course I'm going to call around and do some more research, but a bit of guidance is appreciated.

What kind of SUV? Some have the brake controller relays and crap already installed - only the controller is needed. I had a 2001 Grand Cherokee, for example, that only needed a controller. After that, you simply plugged a wire under the dash into it and everything else was set to go. Jeep had prewired everything as part of the tow package. Worth checking into and saving yourself time, money, and frustration.

2002 Montero Limited. I had no idea about this... I will look into it. Thanks!

Ah, it seems that a separate wiring harness is necessary; Mitsu didn't equip it with a tow package.

That sucks :(
Fellow Montero owner myself, but a 97. Picked it up for pocket change as a winter beater, it impresses me more and more everyday. Does yours have the weird hitch? Attached is mine, factory hitch is this weird reverse Pintle ball setup. Might be kind of hard to see in the picture

I've never paid to have one installed, because it's easy to install them myself, but as an amateur, it takes less than an hour to install one, so if a shop quotes you more than 1 hour's worth of shop rate, go somewhere else. It ought to take them less than an hour.
That having been said, I'd try a car electronics shop; the sort of place that installs stereos and remote starters. Their hourly shop rate will typically be a lot lower than a regular mechanic or RV shop, and that's kind of what they specialize in.

I honestly don't know. Just got mine, and it has a ball receiver installed. It was owned by my girlfriend's grandfather previously, and he never mentioned a weird hitch.

Thanks! I thought about doing it myself, as I've installed stereos and subwoofers before, but I'm a bit nervous since it is controlling the brakes and, subsequently, my life. Ha!

I didn't pull the trigger, because I don't have the cash for a camper right now, but a local trailer hitch shop (yeah, that's a thing, who knew?) quoted me an installed cost of $240 for an analog controller with a 2 year warranty, or $260 for a digital controller with a lifetime warranty.
