Sorry, this isn't car related. But I need to vent.
Google Glass is totally cool. You can fix cars when you don't know how to fix cars, you can see cats superimposed on reality, you can have a on demand mph gauge on a bike that's not a Garmin, and even take awesome photos of cars like an oppo user was Doing a while back. These are thoughtful, useful uses for glass. But these "Glassholes" are ruining for everyone who wants glass. I in fact encounted one, (and probably worse than Sarah Slaucum (or whatever her name is)). His name is Dave Martinez. He claims to be a google glass evangelist. It seems more like he's a PR bot for one thing but advertises for the next company.
One or two months ago, in my FBLA (future business leaders of America club, yes it's real.) the club president invited this shmuck Dave Martinez and some creepy ass photographer from the awful Contra Costa Times. This was at a high school I attended. the meaning of this event was to raise awareness to the club. It ended up worse than i expected.
First this guy starts off by introducing himself and explaining briefly about how you see stuff and control in glass. He claimed google glass to be a different company (and when I corrected him, a obvious "shut up" message was sent at me) and he showed some video on YouTube that was from google about glass. And let me tell you about the audience. 120 something students stuffed in a classroom. This event had been promoted for the past week.
Then this guy talks about Google plus. A lot about Google plus. It was either a plug for Google or he was plain stupid. Martinez was going on and on about how he uploads shit to plus and to follow him. Then he makes a plug on some bloody space app where you see the freaking planets. And then it realized there was 7 minutes left of lunch (it was during lunch, and this shmuck had talked a whole damn majority on the time and barely talked about glass at all). He then started letting people try it on to try his fucking space app. Suddenly it was panic mode for everyone. People raised their hands and vied for trying it on. Only 5 people tried it on, but it was stupid. The guy is one of the most self centered cocky lying plug setting GLASSHOLES I have ever heard of.
And if you go on his website, it's poorly made and is sketchy as fuck.
Dave Martinez didn't explain how glass works. He made irrelevant plugs. (Just google glass is fine, but he didn't even do a google glass plug) He loves the attention of a crowd. He is exactly on the same level as Sarah Slaucum and possibly lower.
Oh yes if you don't want to be a Glasshole and want to make productive uses of glass, I've got a invitation to buy glass from google. As much as I want it, I don't have 1500 spare dollars lying around. Any want that? Peace, opponauts.

You can fix cars when you don't know how to fix cars

Sounds like a book

you can see cats superimposed on reality

Pick up a cat and it sounds like reality

you can have a on demand mph gauge on a bike that's not a Garmin

Sounds like a $10 bike speedometer

I got an invitation but like you, don't have $1500 to spend (or justify) on Glass for now. It's a revolutionary product that'll change the way people do things.

That guy is a douche who demonstrated none of those things, and probably just wanted to show off that he had the thing.

I saw the head picture and my first thought was, honestly, "This is the type of guy I expect to get busted in a motel room with a 16 year old and half a kilo of coke" Then I read the post and saw this happened at a high school. I hate to say it, buuuuuut.....

This morning, I was watching CNBC while I was getting dressed for work. There was a guy on promoting his Bitcoin storage company and how it was going to revolutionize the world.

"How?"

"With Bitcoin, you can transfer money all over the world, to whomever you want!!"

"Like a bank wire."

"Well, that's our big competition."

"Can I get the Bitcoin back if I buy something and it's fraud?"

"No."

"Is the Bitcoin insured if someone hacks in and steals it?"

"No."

Bitcoin: making normal transactions much more complicated and expensive for future generations.

Actually yes...there are some TT/very aero helmets made by many helmet companies, like giro. The giro has a eye mask/sunglasses built in the helmet so the glass won't get dirty/fall off/stuff happening to it. Hope you don't crash though.

Bitcoin: making money because there will always be people willing to buy something just because it's new. If there is no actual product, profit is huge.

Class action lawsuit started days ago in Toronto.

I hate technologists, technology evangelists, or whatever you want to call them. They only see (or, should I say, sell) the upsides of technology without thinking about the consequences of what this new thingamajig will do to the world. They're one of the many reasons why I stopped reading Gizmodo and its related subblogs.

I remember one time I made a comment on a Jalopnik article about the self-driving Google car. I merely pointed out some very serious problems to automating cars by using preexisting examples in aviation - a field in which I have a lot of practical experience. When the article got cross-posted to Gizmodo, you'd think I shat in everybody's cereal by the outright venomous responses I started to receive. How dare I question the infallibility of technology?

Technologists like Sarah Slaucum and your Dave Martinez all want to be the next Steve Jobs. Like Steve Jobs, they really don't know jack shit about how technology works, but they're really good (or they think they're good) at selling it. But anybody that really understands and loves technology would find Steve Jobs to be a poor role model. The man was a con artist and a sociopath and if he decided to get into religion (which he dabbled in before he founded Apple) he would have ended up like Jim Jones.

These sort of people seem to roam around, making frequent statements. If they aren't (stopped) they'll just be going extreme methods. God knows if one of those people make some sort of elite club who have some sort of high klout score and a google glass set and all the goodies. That can lead to disastrous stuff.
Look what happened with Charlie Manson.

He was creepy and his eyes looked like he was snorting stuff before the presentation. The photographer, I would probably find him in the sex offender database.

Bitcoin is a thought experiment that a bunch of people mistook for a real idea and nobody's had the heart to break it to them.

I used to have a very close friend. I stuck my neck out for said friend no matter what. HOWEVER, there was an issue with him. You see, my friend was as greedy and money hungry as they come. We'd come up with a cool idea for something, he'd find a way to exploit it, and squeeze every last cent out of a product. There was nothing he didn't feel like he could make money on, without even being a decent salesman. Whenever I found something I liked, he'd find the best version, acquire it, and rub it in my face. He's the type who would sell his grandmother to cannibal rapists if he thought the profit margin was right. One day, this friend comes to me, comes to my brother, says he's found something new to make money without even doing anything. I think, sounds sketchy. My brother tunes his technobabble out, we shut him up and take turns riding my brother's pocket bike (seriously, true story) and this kid keeps throwing all of his trust fund and anything else he has at bit coin. He's turned into a sort of dorky ass socially awkward hellspawn of Gordon Gekko and Jordan Belfort, not doing anything unless he can make a buck on it. He's now turned into the type of person who when you ask him how he's doing, he'll reply "I just made another $40k, that's how i'm doing." It's not cute. It's not funny. He can stick his $40,000 up his ass.

Bitcoin- not even once

seriously though, I'm not jealous, i just can't wait to see bit coin come crashing, and him lose everything. Then maybe I can have my friend back.

My problem for Glass that I got shouted at on Giz, is what are the social implications? Having every interaction recorded for future reference? No thank you. There are some cool features but also creepy weird ones.

And plus gizmodo is a husk of what it formerly was. It's now just sharing videos on sploid.

This guy Dave Martinez is an absolute con-artist and should NEVER be trusted. He has stolen thousands(over $50 k that I personally know of) from innocent people believing his lies that he is an expert in his field. He won Google glass at an event in 2013 and has been passing himself off as a professional in the tech industry. In reality, he was installing garage door openers before he decided to become a pathetic swindler. Not only is he a schmuck, but he is a criminal. If you ever come across him do yourself a favor and RUN!!!!!! DAVE MARTINEZ is a DISGUSTING individual. Thank you for exposing this complete a**hole. Great post. I wish I would have read this blog sooner.

I’m so happy I found this! I went to an event last year in San Francisco hosted at the Microsoft building. It was some women in tech event around AR / VR. There was a panel of women and this guy was moderating it. He get’s up on stage wearing his stupid google glass (this was 2018.... I doubt it even works, he looked so dumb!) and literally just talks about himself!!

There were lots of people there and everyone looked confused! I had to check that I was in the right event! He then finally starts introducing the women panelists, but doesn’t let them say anything and explains everything about them. He then also explains to us that these women would not be on the stage and where they are now if it was not for him. Then he says: “Anything you want to add to that?” And they awkwardly go: “uhh, ya.. think you got it all”

Afterwards, we all got shitty HP AR headsets, and we got to try the hololense / magic leap devices and man.. are they a huge disappointment (even in a perfectly curated event like the onedome)

We were invited to the event again this year, and emailed back saying “no thanks!” and explained it was because it’s the same guy and man do we not want to ever hear that greasy guy talk again... yikes!

Damn, I’m kinda surprised on how this grifter is still getting gigs in tech; given his self-centeredness and asshole behavior is so open.

I’m also quite happy a post I made back in high school has become this weird meeting point of people who mutually do not like Dave Martinez.
