I saw the movie over the weekend and I have to admit it was awesome. It's no Godfather, obviously, but as far as car movies go I think it was as good as it gets. 100% better than The Fast and The Furious and most of the sequels. ;) On-par with the likes of Gone in Sixty Seconds ( the recent one, not the very '70s with a dollop of extra '70s original Gone in 60 Seconds) and the first and second Transporter.
Aaron Paul was surprisingly good and none of the lines came off as cheesy. I thought for sure that there would be a number of uber-cliche moments throughout but I enjoyed the plot.
Sure there are some wrecks, a couple jumps, and some other stunts, but I never noticed any CGI (they actually did most of the stunts from what I understand). Most of all, it's Need for (fucking) Speed. If you're going to complain about the stunts, I must ask: did you ever play any of the games? They could have really overdone it a-la Transporter 3, but thankfully all of the stunts came off as natural for the movie, nothing was completely unbelievable or ridiculous and it all tied in with the story.
So yeah, it's definitely worth seeing if you're at all interested in cars and I'll be picking it up on bluray when it comes out.

That is good to hear, I was worried it would be way too cheesy. And you're actually right, they used NO CGI. Which is awesome. They did use replicas of things like the Koenigsegg.

I still feel like they'd get a better plot if they lifted the story directly from one of the games.

Couldn't disagree more simply because the most recent F&F movies have finally embraced their ridiculousness and just said "Fuck it, we will be a B-movie about cars with a big budget and just make sure this train wreck hits a fireworks factory in the middle of it". My problem with this movie is Aaron Paul is taking this just so damn serious and he shouldn't have been. Had everyone just gone full camp and hammed up every second and chewed the scenery we'd have a brilliant rainy day movie here. But no, they tried to take it seriously and ruined it.

I'd be disappointed if a movie like that didn't have cheesy lines every 5 minutes.
Based on this, and the list of other car movies you like and compare it to, your post reads as entirely sarcastic.

I don't mind over the top action sequences and such, but when I watched FF6 all I could think of was " how long is this damned runway supposed to be??" I like ridiculous characters like the rock, vin diesel and tyrese but these huge obvious plot issues take me out of the movie. Same thing with Transporter 3, I can take most of the action and characters, but when he's driving the car on the top of two buildings or doing that barrel roll jump thing it cheapens the movie.
I bought into Paul's character and if he treated the movie like a joke it would have killed the film.

So you question the runway length in FF6 but not the absolutely batshit stupid setup of the basic elements of the plot for NFS? The "underground race"? The whole "My shop is failing but I'm the best mechanic in the world and the long lost car is just a shelby mustang anyone with a Summit racing catalog could build"?
See to me, I forgive those physics sequences because of the rule of cool. Yes, there is no way that a runway would be that long. But you know what? A fucking CHARGER roars through a flaming cargo plane and BUSTS OUT THE NOSE! WITH FIRE! Again - it's a train wreck, but that train is hitting a fireworks factory. The NFS train wreck hit several orphanages.

Yeah, it's believable.
