It's even worse

US High School - So kids, you're 16 now. Time to set up the next 60 years of your life. Pick wrong and you'll be doomed to a life of misery. Pick right, and you might only have a decade or two of misery. You want to pick THAT? Good for you! It involves a college degree! But don't go into engineering! The world has enough, you know.

That was my high school. in the 2000s, we were told to not be engineers because the world had enough of them. VW of America basically abandoned their facilities in Auburn Hills, MI partly because they couldn't snag enough engineers from the local schools like Michigan State and University of Michigan. Nor were they successful in poaching engineers from other companies nearby because in the early 2000s, it was a job seeker's market in the area.

I've come to find out that a lot of the issues with the college system (besides tuition) stem from crappy high school counselors.

It amazes me full well knowing the above that people don't save in the US or choose an affordable college.

At least your high school guidance counselor didn't say "You played with Lego's as a kid, and now you're on the robotics team? Anything but engineering is a waste of your brain."

Luckily, mine were all super short (the only male one was like 5'2"), so they didn't take up much space.

They seem to be a-holes too. Mine told me I'd never amount to anything and should apply for community college. I place in the top 10% of my class and got into a variety of decent schools. Ugh. I hate thinking back to the times I had to meet with her.
