I personally enjoy bongzilla, and I don't even smoke.

Love Bongzilla, it's such a shame they broke up. I actually don't smoke either, I just love the vibe stoner rock and metal bands have. I have more sludge/stoner metal recommendations if you're into this kind of stuff. Maybe start out with Weedeater, it's Bongzilla's bassist's old band and they're still making awesome music.

I am always up for recommendations. I actually don't listen to much stoner metal, as I like mine fast and loud! They are just way to relaxed.

Some stoner metal's can get pretty aggro, too! Try High on Fire or Lair of the Minotaur, or even Goatwhore I guess. They're all kinda a mix of thrash and stoner/sludge. I personally dig the slower, more thoughtful kinda shit but I see where you're coming from, a lot of that stuff's just boring.

Dopethrone is such a good album.

Most definitely. I prefer Fanatic's spacier sound, but Dopethrone is on a whole different level just of pure heaviness. It's also one of the three albums that made me pick up guitar, so it means a lot to me sentimentally too.

Dopethrone was my introduction to Electric Wizard, it was also when I was first discovering stoner/sludge/doom so I am quite partial to it. Also Come My Fanatics reminds me of what Henry Rollins says on his radio show. . . And Doom Mantia is a bad ass song.

I don't mind slow either, when I go on a drive or something, it is great. Same for on a long bus ride. But for everything else loud and fast is the way to go. I will try and check out those bands. I always try, and I do in like a month.

Gotta love Electric Wizard, they never seem to get old.

I've been on a big Kyuss kick recently. Can't get this song out of my head:

It's a shame the rest of Circus wasn't as great, love that track. Peronally I'm more of a fan of the stoner/sludge kind of stuff like Electric Wizard or High on Fire but I love me some desert rock from time to time: Kyuss, Nebula, Yawning Man, Slo Burn, there's a ton of awesome groups out there.

Tons of awesome groups from that area that all revolve around former members of Kyuss, hahaha. My uncle was the drummer for Kyuss and Yawning man, actually. Good stuff

Don't tell me your uncle is Alfredo Hernandez, that's so freaking awesome! I love all the collaborations that go on between the musicians. You'd figure it'd be formulaic since it's basically all the same dudes, but somehow every band has such a cool and unique sound, and they're all extremely talented too. You're right, definitely great music.

That's the one, haha. Yeah, that's how I got into Stoner rock before I knew what the distinction was. Glad I left the high desert, though. That place can be pretty miserable.

I feel you, we drove through Palm Desert on our way to San Diego a few years ago and it just kinda seemed like a retirement community: pleasant enough place to live, but if you weren't older with money not a lot was going on. Makes me understand why all the bands went out in the desert and smoked weed and chewed peyote and shrooms, haha. Then again I'm from Indiana so it's not like we've got any room to talk :P

You nailed it. It's pretty miserable, expecially when you see what you could be enjoying when you go down to San Diego, which is exactly what I did. Haven't looked back :)

Can't blame you, I liked San Diego a lot as well. We were there for only two days but still got to go to Old San Diego, Navy Pier (the Midway museum's super cool if you haven't been), the zoo and the natural history museum so we were busy to say the least! Definitely a very neat place.

It's nice, but the property values are NOT, haha. Not as bad as LA or San Fran, but not great.
