Also, can anyone tell me why only the driver's side lights were on? (Front and rear)

Parking lights, so that if the car is left parked on the curb it's easily visible.

Thats what I thought. Wouldn't that be a pretty big drain on the battery? Unless it had a separate battery just for that function because $380k mega-luxobarge.

Those are European parking lights. If you flip a turn signal on a euro car with the engine off it'll light up one side, F+R like that. Required in euro-spec cars and many euro brands keep it in America. My 530i lights the halo lights and rear CELIS light

This article shows how activate the park curb light function on mk5 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2008, 2009, and maybe 2010 Jetta and VW Sportwagen TDI.
This function is already active on European cars and may be active on some early mk5 body style cars. This will turn on the parking lights on one side of the car for better visibility when the car is parked. In Europe, they often leave this light on for short periods because they have really narrow streets. It'll run down the battery so be careful when using it.
To test if it's enabled, with the car off and the key out of the ignition, move the turn signal stalk up or down to signal left or right. If one side of the parking lights turn on, you have it enabled. Here is what it looks like in the front when the turn signal is set to "left" (left side illuminated, right side isn't). In the rear, the taillight on that side is also lit. When you open the door, you'll hear the "headlights on" chime even though the headlights aren't on.

To shut them off, move the turn signal back to neutral.
maybe?

I've seen 30k sedans with the same feature so doubt it's an extra battery. I've wondered the same thing about battery drain, maybe since they usually only use the sidelights it isnt that much of a drain?

Probably a parking light. In lots of cars if you leave the blinker on when you shut the car off the lights on that side stay on.

Most German cars have these "half parking lights" and they use only one side of parking lights lit together. Maybach might have those in US market too.
Some light switches have right and left positions but some can be engaged by leaving the direction indicator switch to either turning position when ignition is turned off (my Polo uses this method).

Is it a Maybach or an early run Hyundai?

My Mercedes has left side/right side parking lights that can be selected. It's a thing, but I don't know why.
