All my friends are going nuts over the return of the McDonald's green shake. Not me, though. What I love about this time of year is the Irish soda bread (preferably without caraway seeds). Too bad it's only available seasonally; I'd buy it all year long if I could.

I do cook a lot, but stop short of baking. I don't have most of the stuff that baking requires (food processor, mixer, spatula, whisk, rolling pin, etc.) in my kitchen. But maybe it's about time I invested in all of that, because there's a lot more I could make if I did.

As 505 mentions, this is real easy to make and that's how I plan to spend my evening, if I don't work late. Since I'm doing Patty's day on a budget, it'll be lots of this and some Murphy's.

Thinks baking is too much work

Around St. Patrick's Day, pretty much every supermarket and bakery will carry it. At least that was my understanding. But I have a friend in Florida who's never heard of the stuff, so maybe it's a regional thing.

Well, I own it, but the dealership maintains it. I just wash and wax it.

truth be told if I remember correctly this can be made with a bowl, baking sheet, kneading by hand and popping it in the oven. I dont bake very well but every one of my significant others since I was 25 was great at it. Another easy baking project is English Muffins strange enough. I am going to transcribe the recipe tonight for you anyways

I've heard of it. There is an irish bar in town that serves it (year round I believe), but I've never had it there.

You don't strictly need all that stuff. I usually make it using a bowl and wooden spoon. And oven, obviously. But I also enjoy baking more than most other forms of food preparation...

Where I live, it's available pretty much all year in any major supermarket. I suppose it's a perk of being so close to Ireland and Ireland.

ok new thread with recipe (I had my girl send it to me knowing it was simple). Use raisins and currants at your own risk foo. That ain't soda bread to me. Traditional Irish Soda Bread:
Ingredients- 3.5 cups flour (all purpose)
.5 tsp salt
.75 tsp baking soda
1.5 cups buttermilk (if you dont have any this is how I do it )
preheat oven to 450
sift (preferred) or just mix dry ingredients together well. Make a little hole in the middle of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk. Mix in from sides of bowl till it is soft, not sticky
make it round
cut a cross on the top with knife
stick in oven for 12-15 min, turn down to 400, bake 20 more min or longer till top is golden, and you can knock on the bottom of bread and it sounds hollow
Up next I will tell you all how to make sauerbraten :)

There is a local "Irish" restaurant that used to bring soda bread with some butter to the table after you ordered. It was so good! Now the place has had new management and is more of a "bro bar" and is kind of lacking in the food department now. I used to go and get a full Irish breakfast with a Guinness a lot. Oh,and potato cakes. They used to be so good!
Not so much any more though.

Excellent. Now to pick up some buttermilk. Whatever we don't use for this will go into waffles.

haha nope just for almost the same price I would rather support Kate's so maybe they can move out of doing it in their barn in a residential neighborhood

I don't mind the Guinness Extra Stout. I'd always choose Murphy's, but I can't get it anywhere that isn't a bit overpriced.

With raisins makes it spotted dog, as far as I know. Thanks for the recipe, will try this week to eat while I lament my lack of corned beef and cabbage.
