Working from home today as I would rather not find out how the new 31" BFG mud terrains I threw on the lifted XJ (because 50 degrees in March means winter's over, right??) would cope with an icy highway already full of accidents. I fully anticipate being accused of 'bitchin out' by people who think 4WD is some magic safety net. So, I give you this:
What my coworkers think I drive:
What I really drive:
What it feels like in ice:

I like the way your's looks. 4 friends of mine have had XJ's so I'm very fond of them. Lots of memories.

Fixed 4wd in mud: actually magic.
Fixed 4wd in snow: still magic, but extremely dark magic with risks to the user
Fixed 4wd on ice: all-wheels-slipping terror - possibly magic, but definitely meddling with unholy forces
Full disclosure: I have on this very blog accused someone I saw in a Wrangler of weenie-ing out because I observed them doing under ten on snow. Normal tires, and I was driving a Benz RWD the opposite direction - and they were holding up traffic. Not quite the same as conducting a Swampers on Ice experimental showing.

Thanks, I just bought this one in October. Still a work in progress (definitely need to trim the fenders for these tires to clear offroad) but at least it's a fun money pit!

Mud tires suck hard in snow and ice.

yeah, xj on the highway in this weather is no fun. Luckily I didn't have to get in the highway, and I leave early enough that I was able to get sideways at every corner (on purpose). Long drifts into the parking lot are always fun.

MT's are the WORST in light snow. I learned that lesson a few years ago. Bridgestone Blizzaks will make your Jeep drive like it has Tracks. I have them on my Silverado and I almost never use 4x4.

Mud terrain tires are terrible on ice. A good set of snowflake rated all terrain tires are much more competent on ice. Most BF Goodrich ATs are snowflake rated, as are General Grabber AT2s. You can even stud the Generals.

Yea, I was running ATs all winter, and totally jumped the gun thinking that 50 degrees in mid March meant we were out of the ice danger zone. Shouldn't have underestimated Pure Michigan.

IDK, My wrangler mt/r's did a pretty decent job this winter with all the snow on the ground.

Fair enough. Most of the big nobbly tires in my experience are shit when it is cold.

March is our snowiest month here in CO so i always have to wait until at least April Fools day to switch, even then I'm still likely to to see another storm before Spring is over.

way to make the Jeep community look bad. EVERYONE knows, 4WD is the same thing as laying rails down and driving on those. It's dark voodoo but you take the good with the bad.

Is that lifted or can you run 31"s with the stock suspension?
I don't really do much off roading with my XJ but my next set of winter tire/wheels I definitely want to have a bit more of an option to.

It's a 3" Rough Country lift, which is a quality lift especially at their prices. I don't think I'd go much higher than that unless I wanted to replace everything (control arms, track bars, brake lines, yada yada) and I had a separate car for highway driving. And like I said, the 31"s will rub offroad, so if you like your fender flares as-is, I wouldn't go bigger than 30" with a 3" lift. They actually rubbed a little on road until I ripped out the wheel liners and front bumper end caps. There's a handy chart on Cherokee Talk here , ctrl+F "Lifts"

Nice, thanks! I'm planning on keeping my stock height for now but who knows, in time when it's not my DD and just my winter/fun toy I may think about a 3" lift. I already need to get another DD this spring so I can spend some time working on it a bit.
