With news of Ford's failed attempt at an affordable race truck . I tried to find some short-bed single-cab trucks with similar power around Ford's original 27k price. I found candidates from both Chevy/GMC and Ram, or as found by Iscrx, even Ford themselves.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Chevy Silverado 1500 LT: $30,274

Kinja'd!!!

It's got the EcoTec 5.3 V8 with 355 hp/383 ft-lbs of torque. It looks pretty sporty with the 20 inch wheels and blue paint. The price could go down even further without the wheels or even dropping down to the WT2 or WT1 trim level.

Ram 1500 Express: $28,220

Kinja'd!!!

It's got the 5.7 Hemi making 395 hp/410 ft-lbs of torque. The Blue Streak paint looks really nice, and so do the 20 inch wheels; which come standard on Express models. And this price includes the optional 8-speed TorqueFlite transmission. The price could go even lower if you can live with all the black plastic on Tradesman models, which is one of the best deals when it comes to power for the price.

Addition: Ford F-150 STX: $30,105

Kinja'd!!!

It's got the 5.0 V8 making 360 hp/ 380 ft-lbs of Torque. Looking good with Blue Flame paint and 20 inch wheels, It comes in as a close competitor to the other two. Once again, you could go lower in price if you select the XL trim level, and you can get the 3.5 EcoBoost with the XL.

So, no matter which brand you choose, you can get something comparable to a Tremor for around the original price stated for the Tremor.

Not going to lie, if I had a better fun car, a ram 1500 express would be in my future instead of my fiesta ST.

It's probably the best deal when it comes to power and looks for the price.

Well a V8 with the 8-speed fuel economy package and a handful of options would make an excellent tow vehicle while also being small enough to be daily driven with ease.

If it wasn't for the Ram Express, you wouldn't have the Tremor. Just putting that out there. ;-)

A friend of mine has a 2014 Ram single cab with the Hemi, air intake, and flowmaster muffler. Looks great, sounds better, faster than snot.

It would be my truck of choice if I was in the market for a Tremor-esque vehicle.

The Ram is just a really solid performance truck deal, or just a good truck deal in general.

Well Ram introduced the Express trim line — originally to be called "Adventurer" — in 2011 and the premise was to build a sport truck by simply taking the inexpensive and basic 5.7 Hemi ST model complete with crank windows, vinyl seats, and vinyl floors and make it look more like an expensive Sport on the outside, or take a Sport model and knock the level of equipment down to make it cheap, all depending on how you want to slice it. And it's been a huge success for Ram. Most of the Ram trucks I see on the road here in Kentucky are Ram Expresses. Hell, even my father owns one.

The F-150 Tremor is, obviously, the result of someone at Ford going, "Hmmmmm ... we need to get in on that action. Ram can't have all of that money." But what someone forgot to tell them was to keep the levels of equipment down to keep the price down. It was obviously going to fail. It doesn't surprise me in the least. Now, if they simply took the XL model with nothing on the inside, made the exterior monochrome, threw in the EcoBoost and thrown on a set of uplevel wheels and tires, and kept the body graphics, they would've done it right. But they loaded it down with too much stuff.

Ford and Dodge... er Ram has done it, with varying levels of success. Now, Chevy just needs to make the Cheyenne and get in on the action.

I disagree. It's probably more along the lines of someone saying, well, we used to make the Lightning, we skipped a generation, let's make another loaded regular cab truck that goes fast.

Both. I was looking at getting a Ram Crew Cab Laramie Longhorn for my next vehicle, but since my wife just decided to get an Expedition in the next month or two, I'll be getting a car.

But the Rams are fantastic trucks.

Ehhh, I dunno. I don't see a Lightning successor in that truck. I just don't. It doesn't pack the same sort of attitude. But aside from that, it isn't a purpose built performance truck like the Lightning was. It's just like the Ram Express — take whatever you have on the shelf to make a sporty looking truck that's sort of fast and call it a day. The Lightning had a bespoke engine and bespoke suspension; it was tuned and honed to be a performance vehicle. The Tremor wasn't, so if it was trying to fill those shoes, it once again failed.

It would be interesting to see if Chevy can keep the base price down to $23,000 like it is for the Ram. I don't get what's so hard about making your base model truck with nothing on the inside and a big engine up front look like it doesn't belong hauling manure around a cattle farm.

My uncle has an '11 Laramie. Deep red with silver trim, beautiful truck. It's the most comfortable truck I've ever rode in, heck, it was more comfortable than some cars I've rode in. Not to mention it was fully loaded at just under 47k.

It wouldn't be, but the manufacturers don't use their brains sometimes. Or most of the time..

Yup. I priced out the Ram I previously described. You get a lot of truck for the money.

Sadly. At least Chrysler is using most of theirs. I would've said all, but they had to go and build the new Cherokee, and it's completely hopeless.

They've been getting a lot of things right lately, that really isn't one of them though.
