I had some thoughts regarding Ford's marketing (a bit of a rant)

I was driving to work and had a series of thoughts (it doesn't happen too often) I would like to relay. The thought process went like this:

- It's snowing again.

- It was 55 and sunny yesterday.

- Didn't I mention I couldn't wait for my summer tires?

- I can't wait for my summer tires.

- Why doesn't Ford advertise the ST?

- Wait...Ford DOES advertise the ST.

- Why doesn't Ford advertise the ST in ways that would make people interested in the ST?

- I would offer my services to Ford just for the chance to advertise the ST.

- Pretty sure my buddy has a GoPro.

- This turn is sandy...weeeeee!

That was roughly my inner dialogue. The part that bugged me was that the ST has been the focus of some commercials...but I forgot all about them. That, in my mind, is bad marketing.

Two dudes talking about black or white photography...boring exit drive through the city. LAME. But I saw this a handful of times on television. The part that stuck with me? Black or white photography.

This one is more interesting but as it was shot primarily with potato cams at night it doesn't showcase as much as it could. Still interesting but not aired much (at least I haven't seen it more than once and forgot all about it until I went on Youtube).

There's one that I cannot find right now that is like one of those "and is better" commercials for the ST but the final shot discussing pricing shows a regular Focus. THAT stuck with me. And I have seen that one more than a handful of times.

I'm not saying that their commercials are boring (they are) or not informative about the vehicles (they actually are) but they don't stick with you. All those "and is better" commercials blend together and I'm left with thinking: Ford makes cars.

There is the Mustang. Classic American icon. It will be coming with a variety of engine options and trim levels to satisfy almost everyone in the market for a coupe. It doesn't need to be advertised because it is an icon, right?

Wrong.

98% or people out there won't and probably don't know that you can get a V6 Mustang (just an example) nor do they care. There are so many differences in the next Mustang that it needs to be said. But the general public just doesn't care about stats unless you say it like this:

" It is fast, looks cool and doesn't drain your wallet at the pump."

Ford should absolutely say that. ABSOLUTELY. But, do it with style. You have the vehicles for it. Focus and Fiesta ST are loved by so many enthusiasts so there's no shortage of good word. Cool, fun commercials will get you the crowd you need. Then they realize,

"oh...I can't drive stick...this may be unnecessary...what should I do?"

How about this Focus/Fiesta in an SEL or Titanium trim? It's automatic, you get all these goodies and it's still a decently fun ride!

"Whoa...the Raptor is waaaaay out of my range but I need a truck."

There are so many trim levels that I'm sure anyone could get a truck to fit their needs (sorry...no Ranger).

I see the ads for the F-series trucks and think that they put so much more effort into making trucks look cool when everyone who is shopping for a truck knows to check out the F-150 anyways. Why not put the same effort into other areas?

I clearly like Ford. I genuinely do. I learned on a Ford, I leased a Ford for my first car of my own and I currently own a bright red spitfire that is the Focus ST. It stands out every time I park my car...and I love it. But nobody knows about it.

I like having it as a "sleeper" but when people ask what I drive (happens a lot actually...weird now that I think of it) they hear "Focus" and say stuff like "why?"

CUZ IT'S FUN.

Thank you and good day.
