This 174k mile 740i. Kinda want to have it..
The owner was "Given" the car by her boyfriend. She couldn't tell me the last time the Water pump or fuel pump was replaced, since she just got it. She wants to pay off student loans with it?
Thing is, I only have 4k to spend, I figured I'd have it and still have 1k in reserve to fix anything that happens between now and December, when I will then sell it for however much I've put into it, giving me about 7k to spend on a reliable car.
Yes? No?

1k is not enough of a reserve. You probably need at least 5k a year.

That's going to be an expensive one to maintain. Make sure that you have watched the Regular Car Review for it.

That's a bit dramatic, don't you think? If it's a well maintained car and with a bit of luck the $1k buffer is fine. With some bad luck it might need some expensive repairs, but $5k?
I wouldn't advice someone with little money getting such a car though.

If you do the work on it yourself, sure... Otherwise... It's going to be a money pit. And it's an automatic...

Don't know about the prices wherever you are, but by UK prices that's total CP. I'd be very surprised if it's not at least a high price where you are, even if not double or treble what the car's worth like it would be here.
As others have said, have a look at what parts can cost before you go anywhere near it. You'd be amazed how fast bills can mount up if the wrong things need replacing.
If you can get it for $1k and keep $3k in reserve, instead of the other way around, it's NP all the way :)

This one doesn't sound like a well-maintained car though.

I agree with others, total CP. That's a lot of miles, and the title makes it just seem sketchy. Probably be a disaster in the long run.

First off, you won't be spending $5k a year to maintain it. You might spend $2.5k right after you buy it to get it into excellent condition, but then you'll have a lot of trouble free miles.
See if you can get it for under $2k.
