Mechanically the '04+ 9-5 was the most solid, by then Saab had fixed the sludge issue and updated the timing chain components. The earlier engines were notorious for developing sludge due to poor PCV performance and inadequate maintenance. With the right owner the earlier engines are just as reliable, but they're harder to find in good condition. The 3.0L V6 was solid, but requires timing belts every 60k miles or so. I'd get an '04-'05 Aero or Arc, they are the best looking, have the more reliable TD04 turbo, and make lots of power.

Also, forget the turbodiesel V6. It's a royal pain.
