Mr. Tada is the chief engineer of the twins, they are his children.
What confuses me is that we were told Mr. Tada would stop any devlopemnt for the 86 to work on the upcoming Supra...

Those are good numbers. Compared to companies like Mazda, Toyota always sells a lot of every one of its models. Even the terrible ones.
FYI, they sold a little bit under 200K RX-8s over the course of the model run. TONS in the beginning, then numbers jumped off significantly after the reliability issues surfaced.

The Corvair was considered a failure by GM.
They sold more than 200,000 of them each year from 1960 through 1965, and still sold over 100,000 in 1966.

Worldwide, it seems like it. I see at least one, or two different Frs/Brz every day, just on the commute alone. It's an hour, so that might explain it.

I see them all over too. One of my neighbors just bought a white BRZ. I hope they keep selling! Then again, there are also 2 CRZs on my street as well, which can't be normal....

Don't use the 'What I see everyday' argument. Given the patchwork of localized trends that exist in the global auto industry, you cannot extract that kind of information from such limited data. What you see everyday can tell us what your neighbors and perhaps what the people in your metro area are buying, but a single metro area will not be able to tell us what the entire global auto industry it doing.
Combined, the GT86 twins have sold 50k cars in NA, including Canada. That's a fact. The other 50k could have come from other smaller auto markets. I believe 100k is acurrate, mostly because out of all the people to pull sales numbers out of their ass, it's not going to be the one person with access to real sales data.

'Failure' is relative to ROI. These things go for about ~$25k new, right? 100k cars x $25k = ~$2.5B in revenue.
What's the level of investment relative to the return period? Only the folks are Scooby and toyota are going to know that. But it's worth noting that car production requires continuous investment and infrastructure that will scale with output. How many factories do you need to make 10x as many 2013-era 86s?

Agreed. 100,000 isn't really all that much for 1 year for a large company, but it is a sign of a good start.

They sold about 150,000 240SXs in the USA, and that was just the USA, not worldwide. Worldwide they probably sold a lot more of the S13 chassis, since the 200SX, 180SX, and Silvia all shared the same basic platform.
