Seriously, the traffic in this city, for its size, is mind boggling.

I moved away in 2008, and when I went back last year I couldn't believe how much worse the traffic had gotten. Hell, when I was there it wasn't uncommon for it to take 45 minutes just to get to UT from South 1st & Ben White. I learned pretty early on to avoid I-35 at all costs. But now? I don't know how anyone gets anywhere out there anymore.
I live in LA now, and I swear the traffic doesn't seem as bad out here. The distances traveled are greater, and I probably do spend about as much time in a car here as I did there. But it's more often a moving car out here, not one waiting at a dead stop to move forward another car-length on the Interstate. I even take the 101 home on my evening commute, because it's usually moving right along, even at 5 p.m.
Much as I miss Torchy's and Amy's and Side Bar, I don't think I'll be moving back.

We have this "spectrum of liveability" thing. My wife an I. At the moment, life in Austin is still on the "worth the hassle" side of the scale, but I feel it tipping. The congestion, the cost, the environment. It's all getting worse in the name of Getting Better. We net 110 new residents a day. In 10 years they estimate there will be 300,000 more cars on the roads, to say nothing about the number associated with events like SXSW, UT games, F1, ACL fest, etc.
I'm starting to feel we could get the quality of life from the amenities we actually use and enjoy in many other cities for far less hassle.

Aw, not Toy Joy. That sucks.
For what it's worth, any city I'd actually want to live in is going to be expensive and have lots of traffic. To a certain degree, I'm resigned to just living with it. But really, the only cities I can think of other than Los Angeles where I'd like to live are Austin and Denver. Maybe San Francisco.
