All with similar miles and supposedly gobs of maintenance and paperwork. The question is, what color do I want?

I'd much rather have one of these than an AMG.

What ever you get replace that awful fake wood trim with the graphite trim (i think that is what it was called) on a black interior it looks much better IMO
(random example from google)

I would stay away from the early models of E39 M5s, they drank oil and need more TLC than the later models (it's why I bought a '03 last year). That said, these prices have only been going up on good examples recently.

I love lemans blue, best color on a M5 IMO
One of my friends in souther maryland just picked up this 2000 M5 from NC for around 12,500. It has barely over 100k on it.
Prices like what he paid, and the ones you're listing make me think how fesable it'd be to get one of these as an awesome DD.... But then I think of the people who are asking like 25 grand for a car with 100k+ on it just because it has fake leather on the dash, or I think of the fact that the e39 wasn't the pinnacle of reliability (VANOS bro!) and I start to wonder if this is as bad an idea as when I bought an e23.... Which I put 3000 miles on before the trans let go.
Conflicted! Conflicted feels!

I would probably go with the aluminum trim. I can't stand the wood trim in BMWs.

I'd go for the green.

It always seems like a good idea until you get into it. After you buy a $15k M5 you surf forums and start to budget for repairs that everyone says you'll need. Then you worry about breaking stuff and try to baby it for a bit. I would want something fun that I don't have to worry about. If I'm honest with myself I think the only M car I would get is probably an E36 M3. They're old and cheap enough not to care, but are still performance oriented enough for daily shenanigans.

Better find one with a spare transmission.

Hold up.
AE86, E30 M3, SLS AMG and an E39 M5?
Does your garage shoot beams of awesome into outer space and draw planets closer with its badass gravitational pull?

I think thats why most people buy e36 m3's now, because they're just cheap. Even e28 M5's with 150k miles on them fetch more money.
I do see a lot of people on M5board who DD E39's though

They've also probably got another reliable daily driver if the M5 needs to go in the shop. My back-up car would end up being my CJ3A, and I'd rather not spend $32/day on gas commuting to work.

I guess that plays in my favor since I have a few backups
This doesn't make me any less conflicted. I've been wanting to pick up a S60R for the longest time but M5's got so cheap, they're pretty much at the same price range now

I would think the M5 is only going to go up in value compared to the S60R. Plus there are probably more BMW enthusiasts than Volvo enthusiasts willing to pay for the last "good" M car.

This blue. BMW's, especially M cars, always look good in blue

The blue is the best color of the three, then the silver. That green ain't no good.
Also, pull the trigger on one! My dad drove one of these when I was growing up and they're the best cars ever made.

There really is only one answer. It's the blue. If it's a choice between blue, green, or silver — always choose blue.

There's a reason a lot of the specialty dealers that focus on E39 M5s don't touch anything older than 2002. Reliability went WAY up on 2002/2003s when they made some big engine updates. I've got a '03 with almost 97k that's still on the original clutch (no slippage at all, PPI even said "like new"), no VANOs noise, etc. I would (and don't) have a problem DD'ing a later model, but watch out for the cheaper early E39s. There's something behind the $10k difference between a good '00/'01 and a '02/'03 you see in the market, it's not just the facelift.

I'd go for the silver, even though it conflicts a bit with the headlights.
