If you were given a good deal on a slightly used SUV from a relative...

....would you buy it? Even if it's not a perfect match for what you want?

Kinja'd!!!

A relative has a 1 year old 4Runner Trail Edition w/ KDSS w/ 12k miles on the odometer. He's tired of it, and wants to sell it. He will dump it cheap for my wife and I.

Not exactly my bag, since I was looking at a 3 wagon or an V60 Polestar before this offer came up; but I can see the awesomeness of it (since the SF Bay Area is actually close to alot of offroading).

Should I give up my Subaru Outback Turbo for this 4 Runner? A cheap; almost new car that's sort of awesome? The Subie has 75k on it, and has gone through one turbo already.

Or am I fucking nuts?

That is a good truck. If it is too good of a deal to pass up...don't pass it up.

Get the SUV. Big, good off road, practical, and the commanding few above all the little cars is a lot of fun. Not to mention the mudding/desert trips you can have in the SUV it would be fun.

i did. bought a '97 4runner from my dad, drove it to 200k, then gave it to my brother. it's at 250k and the worse it gets, the more i want it back.

Father-to-his-only-daughter cheap. I'm guessing 25k or so, so he can use that towards a new car. That car is like 35k-40k used right now on the market.

That's what I'm thinking. Those trucks are rare, and supposedly a (Wrangler-Level) beast offroad.

It's pretty. It will last, too. Are you okay with living with it?

If off roading is in your future, by all means do it! Put some sliders on and I'll see you in Moab

If you guys have kids or are planning to, You will both appreciate how much easier it is to get them in and out of something that has more room and seats that are higher off the ground. When my first son was born we got rid of my wife's 2 door Caviler really quick for a new Honda CRV. I got a new car to replace my Neon a year or so before and It came down to a 3 series BMW or a Dodge Durango. I ended up getting the Durango for the room. This was 2001 so gas wasn't as expensive but I made the right choice, I got what was best for the family, not what was best for me. You have a little harder choice since the Subaru is much more family friendly than either a Neon or a Caviler. If it's a great deal, I would go with the 4Runner, if it's a grand or two less than what you could get it from the car lot, I'd have to think twice. 4Runners are really nice though, great trucks.

Ugh. Sliders, air lockers, winch kits. I've been perusing them since Sunday when I heard about possibly inheriting the car.

Do it! As much as I love Subies, I'd take that in a heartbeat.

Side note, what year is your Subie?

Easy there. You already have a rear e-locker I think in the trail edition with A-trac. So you should be pretty good there. I'm running a 2012 Taco with that basic setup. I would like to do a lift but the sliders were a good idea first. I can get away with just the sliders for now.

If you are in the bay area you can get some sweet BAMF sliders without getting annihilated by the cost of shipping.

I would probably take one over a Wrangler, and I wouldn't be afraid to take it on medium duty off road trips either.

I love the multifaceted nature of my outback. Pretty lux inside, and just surprisingly fast on the road. It is after all just a slightly wobbly LGT wagon. It can do some pretty decent light duty offroading too.

If it's a stinkin' deal, why pass it up? Try it out, have a little fun, and if it's not your piece of cake you could always sell it a little ways down the road (for a profit even, perhaps?).

Fellow Bay Area resident/Subaru owner here - curious about this off-road activities in the area you mentioned? I don't have much ground clearance since I'm in a Legacy GT, but a little bit of dirt road hooning sounds fun...are there any such mild options around?!

The Rav4 looks good in that shot damn.

Anyways, I'd take it. Toyota has an impeccable reputation for off-roading.

Hells yes do it! 4runners hold their value so well, and the trail edition with KDDS is a great combo, it will be highly desirable in a few years. Buy it.
