PC tip: this evening I made a full scansion of my beloved PC with Microsoft Security Essentials (3:30h), since I got an Explorer error. Result was that (notwithstanding all my protections), I got an " Exploit:Java/Urains.A " trojan, that was removed. May be this explains why my HD was was revving for minutes, even when I was not using it. Now, apparently it doesn't do that anymore and it's almost been one hour that I seldom hear the cooling ventilator... then bros, do a full scan from time to time. My last was last year...

Always update your Java. 80% of exploits are Java-based.

I have Java version 7, update 51 and the updating is automatic. Funny is that the exploit was in the Java folder.

You may want to send that info to Oracle. It'll be fixed in Thursday's Java 7 update 52, AUTOVOX Edition lol.

Seriously though, as a sys admin, I loathe Java. I keep it off all my systems except those that explicitly require it. No problems on the boxes without it.

Thanks for the information. I installed some time ago a FF addon that allows to control where and when to use Java. I didn't use it so far, but now I'm gonna give it a try...

P.S. Since I can choose, may be you can tell me if I'd be quite safe with the only Java Script disabled, or if I'd better disable both Java Scrips (JS) and Java (J) as well. Thank you indeed, in advance!

Definitely do that. You can also disable Java in each browser, using one for regular browsing and the other for using Java-based systems. That'll keep you safer as well.

Java and JavaScript are two completely separate technologies. Most JS is sandboxed these days and are relatively harmless.

BTW, with Java Script disabled, I'm logged out from Oppo and I cannot see the replies. So that's not the answer. Wonder what are the effects of only disabling Java.

UPDATE: Now I know the difference between JS and J . I'm keeping JS enabled (otherwise no Oppo) and I'm keeping Java disabled till I relly need it. Anyway, thanks for the hint: I owe you a beer!

You don't need to disable JavaScript.
