One of the all-time great FSAE designs. If only it had an on-board starter...

According to Michael Royce, they would have let it compete without the onboard starter. At the time this wasn't as big of a deal. I guess it had some serious issues with fuel leaks that ultimately stopped them from running at comp.

Interesting. Given the safety concern over fuel leaks, that seems like a much more plausible explanation for why it never ran. A real shame.

Good to hear Michael considered letting it run without the starter. It's the realization that these are student projects, and so letting them run whenever safe and fair which makes FSAE tech really great. (If anyone out there reads this and has ever worked FSAE tech inspection: Thanks, and sorry for being a pain in the butt.)

It also would have been great to see what the weight distribution numbers were on that car. With the gearbox behind the axle, the large block with lots of big accessories right in front of it, and the light-looking front end construction, I assume it would be a really rear-biased car.

One other thing I just noticed, which I never did before, was the inside-out brake install on the front wheels. (Being a "transmission spacer" specialist, I always saw VXXX as an amazing little engine with a chassis strapped to it.) I'm not sure if I like the heat transfer from the brake disc to the wheel, but it's certainly interesting.

Edited for get-your-paragraphs-in-the-right-order-you-write-for-a-living-you-idiot. Apologies.

Your last paragraph pretty much nailed it from all of the accounts I heard from the people who were there. Chassis and suspension was pretty much an afterthought and had the rigidity of "wet spaghetti".
