I've tried Craigslist, AOL Auto, AutoTrader, ebay, and crappy government auction sites.

Preferably something that will run, but I'm guessing that's a lot to ask for that price.

Did you try setting a price limit on Craigslist?

Cl is your best bet, or show up at cheap police auctions, you can't be picky with cheap cars, as I learned.

I use Kijiji which is more popular than Craigslist around here. Gettting a running car isn't too hard but running correctly car is rare. If the engine doesn't sounds like a pissed off go kart there is likely something screwy in the drivetrain. That being said I have not found many people who have had better luck with 1500 dollar cars over 500 dollar ones.

Try the 24h of Lemons forum, they usually manage to find tons of cool stuff.

They basically don't exist anymore.

LeMons should raise their limit to $1000 to reflect the new reality.

Yes. I found lots of stupid ones listed at $1, $20, etc meant to bait you then tires and parts at various prices.

Haha... that place must be crawling with 'em because of the price range rule.

Thanks

Yeah. The car I hope to get is just something to beat around. I luckily won't have to worry about it running all the time.

Yeah, Police auctions that don't have listed prices are great for that kind of thing. I'm looking just for something interesting to restore.

Save up and pinch those pennies. Getting another 300-500 bucks could help you get a decent ride.

Locally. You'd be surprised what's for sale if you just ask.

Go find a mechanic who services a lower-middle class neighborhood, preferably with lots of old people and college kids. Then make friends with him, and let him know you want a $500 car.

I bought a ranger for $500, drove it for 9 months, had to fix one brake line from wear, put a cheap radio in it, and do a balljoint and get an alignment due to an accident. I ended up selling it for $750 and pretty much breaking even on it. It was actually a pretty decent running and driving little truck, but the frame was patched (professionally) and it had more dents than straight spots.

Can someone get this man out of the grey?

I'll try this out sometime. Gotta find some mechanics.

You have to set a min price of 100. That normally does it
