I think I want to get it, mostly for the mods. (Which is why I want RFactor 1 not 2) I heard the physics are great. The graphics are bad, but that's what to expect from an old game like this I guess. What do you guys think?

Have you tried GTR2? Not as big in mod community as rFactor is, but it isn't shy of it either, plus it is a bit newer, and features a fully licensed FIA 2003-2004 season, with 24hr races and so on. And I'm pretty sure it is cheaper.

I considered it, however I want something that's less focused towards only races and lap times, and something I can enjoy and drift around in. Although I haven't played it, I heard it's a fantastic game.

I own rFactor 1, and used to play it a ton. It has a ton of great mods, but the community is fractured a bit, some of the mod sites are scammy, and it's starting to show its age. However, people are breathing new life into it every day. There's even an addon that allows weather changes.

Well its more of a game than rFactor is, but I catch your drift, rFactor is more for "casual" fun with cars, were GTR2 is more serious racing. You should definitely try it out! Many of my nights have disappeared because of this game, especially on Bathurst

I spent lots of time in Rfactor. iRacing has superior track surface simulation and possibly physics modeling NOW but rfactor2 probably gives it a great run. Rfactor models 12 degree of physics and uses actual suspension arm measures to model contact patches. And what iracing doesnt offer enough of, rfactor gives overloads of. Such as fields as large as you can imagine. A fantastic encode so online races aren't glitch/ghost car affected too badly. Open modding community of people who go to museums and pro shops snd measure suspension geometry to simulate reality. Endless projects. The 917 was amazing. Vintage cars were squirrly under braking. Real feeling stuff! Projects reviewed by real drivers of that mod such as Porsche Cup guys. An amazing mod i reference is the 79 F1 mod. As accurate as can be done without scanning it. Graphics...really good. Not awesome but really good.

Cons??
Yeah unless you become part of a dedicated forum with its own large population getting a server full of likeminded drivers that are good enough to last 45 minutes at Silverstone....well good luck finding that in open servers. Thats the thing. So many mods = not easy to find people to race your preference without joining forums. And then that other forum might not like vintage cars then you join another forum g or that...so on and so on. Like the PlayStation community..user has control served on their pc or rented space.

Now, i Racing has total control of environment and server consistency. Like Xbox does it. They control all and limit field size. I had a great Rfactor race of the e21 320i bmw bat mobiles at the new Nurburgring short course of 30+ cars that lasted 30 laps. 40 minutes later I crossed the line in 5th having fought the last 10+ minutes bumper to bumper trying everything and feeling the rear tires wear out on me. The competition was the rfactor.it group who were amazing. Some of those went on to be pro online racers.

Rfactor was awesome but I fear the organization of the racing lets it down dramatically and I favor i Racing now.

rFactor more casual than GTR2? Are you on crack? I started out with gtr2, and hands down rfactor is 10 times the sim gtr2 is. The steering feedback on gtr2, race07, gtr EVO, any simbin game basically is no where near rfactor. That margin grows more so if you install and learn to configure real feel plugin. So yeah, rfactor is much more realistic. No contest really. There is a reason why ISI/rfactor produces & maintains over half of the formula 1 team simulators and simbin produces & maintains a big fat zero f1 simulators.
