This version is an old revision to the guidelines and is preserved just for the sake of documentation. The most recent version is located at
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
.
As these guidelines have become the de facto set of rules for the Oppositelock community, I felt that updating them was in the best interest of every member who contributes in any capacity. Some of these modifications are to clarify our position and provide a bit more additional detail as to what is expected from all community members (defined as anyone who comments or posts in this space). Other modifications are just updates due to changes in kinja (doing away with the sections on “grey” commenters and following for oppo).
With apologies and thanks to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , the rules of Oppositelock basically can be summed up thusly:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Don’t be a dick.
Seriously, don’t be a dick.
And don’t be a shit-stirrer either (here or elsewhere that will lead back to Oppo. Specifically this entails no trolling, no troll parties, no burner baiting and no posts attacking other Gawker/Kinja communities - Jezebel, Groupthink, Gawker, etc).
NSFW must be announced in the title of your post and be hidden behind a safe lead image. If NSFW content is the first piece of media (picture or video) regardless of where it is in the post, Kinja will display it on the Oppo frontpage. (If you have doubts whether it’s NSFW, it is. This includes nudity, real or implied, gore or anything else that might get someone in trouble if their boss caught them reading it at work, assuming that you are allowed to browse the internet at work. Additionally, let’s keep this stuff to “R” rated material, we’re not a porn site, the internet is full of porn, we don’t need more here).
Political / Sensitive topics are welcome, however it is recommended that you announce such content in the title and that all sensitive material is posted “after the jump.”
Do not “doxx” anyone without their explicit permission (do not reveal personal details about a person which could be used to identify them).
When sharing material from other areas of Kinja, or from posts originating from within Oppositelock, keep all of the above rules in mind.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
OppositeLock is an off topic forum for everyone that happens to have a very obvious and intentional leaning toward subjects focused mainly on all things automotive, mechanical and generally of interest to folks who love all manner of contraptions that move. However, that doesn’t limit us to only those topics. We’re all humans here. We have lives, we will probably talk about them in detail. But this community is for everyone. Seriously. If there are commenters from Groupthink/Jezebel/Gawker who want to talk cars or pick our collective minds on the best planes from World War II? Awesome. The same goes for everybody else from anywhere else. I have, and will continue to welcome anyone who shows interest in joining and contributing / building our community.
However, That is not to say that ‘everyone’ will initially get author access or that ‘everyone’ will be approved. In practice, unless we know you to be a troll by name, and you have not expressed a desire to join our community and understand that your prior behavior will probably, at least initially, color the reactions to you (we can, and do forgive, we rarely forget), in general we’ll probably add anyone who asks to join. I want to make clear that while this isn’t Jalopnik, we do still mainly talk about cars and car related subjects, that this is an offtopic forum that is a general purpose space and, accordingly, our aim is to make this a welcoming place that people feel comfortable interacting with each other in.
In order to accomplish this, we strongly discourage people from making posts attacking other commenters or communities, starting inter-forum pissing contests, and purposefully picking fights with people you don’t get along with.
We are not asking that everyone get along. We are not banning cathartic ranting. But we are asking that authors on this forum maybe think twice before posting about how much they hate Commenter X, especially when they know Commenter X will see the post, and everyone will start bitching about everyone else. No one enjoys seeing that go down. It’s awkward, it’s embarrassing, and most importantly, it damages the community. This would, in 99.9% of occasions, be considered a major violation of rules #1-3. What is that 0.1% of exception? Publicly being called out for behavior which violates the spirit and/or rules of the community which also will enrich the community by raising the levels of awareness.
The expectation is to treat others the way you would actually want people to treat you in a public space where consequences exist. Though this should go without saying, explicit or heavily implied sexism and racism will not be tolerated , period. This has little to do with “being PC” but is based on the expectation of being an open and respectful space. Personal attacks, call to arm posts, asking who the most reviled commenter or community here is, essentially any commenting behavior which specifically negatively attacks another commenter, area or member of staff with the intent to cause disruption or general harm to a specific commenter or to the community at large is verboten. You will be warned, suspended or banned depending on the severity of the issue and other criteria.
A major point of clarification. The moderators are not here to censor unpopular opinions. We are not asking you to post only along certain political views. We are not asking you to refrain from discussing touchy subjects. The moderators are not here to police your views . For the most part (see above) talk about anything you want – make your points respectfully and clearly, accept that not everyone will agree with what you have to say, and understand that this is an open forum where a lot of different kinds of people will read your post. But above all, don’t be a dick.
The Moderators
I am one of the moderators. I am not the owner of the forum, that particular role belongs to Porsche9146. There are a handful of moderators here and an incomplete list of them is as follows: Nobody, Dusty Ventures, pauljones, Crown Victor Victoria, SnapUndersteer Italian Spiderman, Party-vi, More Power, Axel-ripper, Brian, the life of, Das Wauto, Jagvar, and Automatch. As moderators, our goal is to essentially be invisible when we are in that role, occasionally reminding people of the rules, and our expected primary public function is welcoming newcomers and adding users to the community.
The launch of Kinja has given you, the commenters, access to a number of tools that used to be admin-only. This means less work for us, but it also means that you, the commenters, need to be more responsible for your conversations on this board. If someone is harassing you in response to something you wrote? Dismiss them. If the conversation is unproductive, walk away. If someone is chiding you for cursing too much, dismiss them and walk away. Basically, we expect you all to act like adults and therefore to handle conflict like adults (This applies even if you are not technically an adult).
If you run into a situation that you are unsure of how to handle, or if you find a troll or have a persistent issue with another commenter, feel free to contact any of the mods for assistance. You can find us on-site or email us at oppomoderator@gmail.com or contact us on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Posting Access
There are two main levels of posting access to Oppo. One is the basic commenter and the other is to be granted authorship privileges. Like on the main page, anyone is free to comment on any thread on Oppo, however to create a post or share content to Oppositelock page, you must be an author.
Authorship privileges are granted by the mods. If you wish to post to Oppositelock, respond to one of our semi-regular request threads. You may not get authorship the first time you ask, but you are welcome to request again at any point. (See any request post for expanded details on this process.)
Anything else I/we can clarify? Let me know and I, or one of the other mods will respond to you.

Posting Access
There are two main levels of posting access to Oppo. One is the basic commenter and the other is authorship privileges.
Like on the main page, anyone is free to comment on any thread on Oppo. If you are not ‘followed’ by Oppo, your comment will show up as ‘grey’. This is not a judgment on your worth as a person or a commenter; it is simply how Kinja works.
Authorship privileges are granted by the mods. If you wish to post to Oppositelock, respond to one of our semi-regular request threads. You may not get authorship the first time you ask, but you are welcome to request again at any point. (See any request post for expanded details on this process.) Authors are able to follow/unfollow commenters on behalf of ‘Oppositelock’. ‘Following’ moves a commenter from a ‘grey’ to a ‘black’. We trust authors enough to not need our permission to ‘follow’ a commenter – we wouldn’t have made you authors if we didn’t trust you in the first place. However, any author found to be abusing their posting access to mess with other commenter’s status on Oppo will have their authorship revoked, and possibly be banned from the forum.
Anything else I/we can clarify? Let me know and I, or one of the other mods will respond to you.

Excellent timing as always, a few people seem to have forgotten rules 1-3.
Not me though. I only violate #1.

You may wanna add the "no snuff films" part to the NSFW/prohibited section, as one of the mods (Dusty, maybe?) stated yesterday-ish. (I think it was a gif of a fatal crash, I never saw the original post).

Hmmmm.... I'm not sure that we want to specifically codify that, but I'll pass it along to the rest of the group. Thanks for bringing it up.

Heh. Well, there go all my snide remarks about Jezebel!
On serious note, thanks for reiterating this stuff. Great content and discussion that doesn't immediately devolve into an internet flame war is what makes Oppo a brilliant place.

I'm starting to notice more people being in violation of the "don't be a dick" rule.
your first response to something should never be an over the top diatribe about how someone is wrong/idiotic.
![]() 02/27/2014 at 12:21 |

How about we tag NSFW posts better, so I don't open up a thread with a pic of a dodge charger and end up knee deep in gay porn
(yes it was labeled NSFW, but it wasn't very clear what was inside)
I think that was unexpected for most people that day
![]() 02/27/2014 at 12:22 |

also same rules apply over on Oppo on facebook,
which is Velocity Silky Smooth Six and my pet project. I have nixed some spam obviously but occasionally the dick comment
Oh and come like it too

Hopefully this is right place to post this. I have been a lurking member of Oppo for around two or three years now. I had authorship privileges a while back but got Kinja'd and no longer do. While not a necessarily frequent poster I would greatly enjoy being able to once again. Thanks much!

Doesn't it fall under "gore" in the language that's already part of bullet 4? I mean if we have to be that specific...
![]() 02/27/2014 at 12:23 |

It is hard to regulate tags, but as long as the OP announces NSFW in the title I think it should be Ok.

I'm a cockroach. I will survive.
![]() 02/27/2014 at 12:25 |

I agree with these rules. Lets keep Oppo a car site for enthusiasts. If you want to troll or post cat memes, there are PLENTY of outlets for that behavior elsewhere on the internet
![]() 02/27/2014 at 12:25 |
|
It probably does, but there are some people who need everything spoonfed to them. I'm not calling for it one way or the other, just mentioning that it was brought up the other day.
![]() 02/27/2014 at 12:25 |
|
I just wish we could break that down in the tags
If we have an influx of.... differences in NSFW, maybe we should break it down into "straightbait" and "queerbait"
justsayin
![]() 02/27/2014 at 12:25 |
|
I think we had an influx of new people that may not have been aware how we operate. Which is why we decided to re-post an updated regulations.

I just added you as an author...welcome back!
![]() 02/27/2014 at 12:29 |
|
Do you have an example of what you're describing? People are allowed to dislike things and voice those opinions. Sometimes it leads to quality discussion.
But sometimes it devolves into internet slapfighting, or the ire is directed at an individual or individuals on here, or any other group or person that oppo can be connected to in the kinjaverse (is that even a thing?).
For the latter cases, we are very likely to involve ourselves. Personal attacks, making quantifiable trouble for oppo participants...that stuff won't fly.

I'm telling you how you much freedom you have.
![]() 02/27/2014 at 12:35 |

I think I know why you don't like cat memes.
![]() 02/27/2014 at 12:36 |
|
Fair point, and it's true that some might not see harm in sharing digitized video of a human life being ended.
The main issue for us is to keep the handbook lightweight in language and fairly broad in scope. Nobody's going to want to read or remember a 20-item list of dos and don'ts, and tbh our main moderating tool is to allow people to use their best judgement.
We aren't cops and don't want to be. We're more like docents, or the people at the Tourist Information booth, only we have tasers. But it's a lot of paperwork if we have to use the taser and we don't like paperwork.
![]() 02/27/2014 at 12:36 |

I feel as though I may be partially responsible for this getting posted again...
![]() 02/27/2014 at 12:37 |

![]() 02/27/2014 at 12:39 |

Although I disagree (I think clear NSFW is good enough, you are at your own risk after that), maybe the lead-in image could serve as a clue - insist that you use a picture of a car from this list, maybe, for lead-in pics on gay threads!
http://gaylife.about.com/od/entertainme…
(I'm not gay, I just googled "gay cars" and that's what I found)
I'm only half-serious about this. But it's an idea!

Ok, I read it. To me, it looks like the person is being abrasive and a little rude, but falling well short of what I'd classify as dick behavior.
In that instance, the best way for things to be handled would be if the OP just dismissed those comments. As the OP replied to him, my gut tells me this exchange was not distressing or inappropriate in the OP's eyes.
For things like heated differences of opinion, we don't do much unless 1) someone asks for help and 1.a) it is a serious issue, or 2) things have moved beyond a user's ability to handle things him or herself. Like if someone replies to someone else and is saying shit about a different person, or it's just totally out of control.
The overarching philosophy is that the community has the most say over what goes on in here, not the mods. Seems to work the best that way.
But thanks for bringing this up.

This is not directed at any one person. There were many many many factors that went into a revision of this. This is simply a needed update to clarify some common questions and the general positions that we take.
![]() 02/27/2014 at 14:08 |
|
To me it was a "dick comment" and added no value to the conversation at all.
I think the OP did a fantastic diffuse of the situation without having to dismiss, so props to him for that. I probably would have had to dismiss or I would have been rude back.

OppositeLock is an off topic forum for everyone that happens to have a very obvious and intentional leaning toward subjects focused mainly on all things automotive, mechanical and generally of interest to folks who love all manner of contraptions that move. However, that doesn't limit us to only those topics.
Translation: we're mostly about cars, but cat memes are still ok

Don't be a dick.
Seriously, don't be a dick.
I still feel bad for breaking these rules from time to time ..

You're welcome!
I've used it like 5 different times today, it's so useful.

PLUS HIS CAR HAS ASYMMETRICAL DOORS. WHY THE FUCK WOULD WE TRUST HIM TO WRITE VALID CONTENT!

Awesome! As someone new to Oppo and Kinja in general, this is exactly what I needed. Much thanks for posting this.

Kind of dumb question here.. What does "doxx" mean?
I thought I was hip, but apparently not...

Only downside, it's 6mb. I think i'll trim down some of the frames tonight when I take a look at a Travis freak out gif.

I love it how it is, I've had no problems with the size as of yet.

Added you. Went through a bit of your comment history... Pluses for Led Zeppelin and admitting you like Coors. =P
Welcome aboard.

Thanks and get the Led out!

Please, could you add that it's not allowed to share to Oppo our own replies from the other Gawker sites? But if so, why there is the possibility of doing that from the replies' drop down menu? And why (for example) a repost of mine to Oppo of a reply of mine to an Editor's post in Jalopnik, can be deleted by whoever wants to do so? Even by the most unworthy burner? This sure is an anomaly that should be corrected: only the mods should be able to delete a commentator's repost. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It's internet slang for revealing personal details about a person (spelled either as dox or doxx) such as real name, address, phone numbers, email addresses, etc...

Hey AV, the share feature is one which is unlikely to go away, and we (some of the moderators) have been having some internal discussions regarding the governing of shares/unshares.
Currently this ability resides with all authors, and is likely to remain that way (because of front page usage). Let me get back to you on this, because I agree that it can be maddening to see legitimate shares disappear.

No, we are the Mods.

(3 DOORS * 2 HEADLIGHTS * (1205Kg - 104 inches long)) + (6 gears * revealed on the 10th day of the month) = 6666, AKA the number of the superdevil, AKA Porsche. THE END IS NIGH

So are we saying no visible lady bits, or no sexual acts. I don't mind a lady nest every now and then but I don't really want to see hard core porn here, it messes with my reading comprehension.

I totally agree with this. There have been a ton of posts labeled NSFW that merely have bad language. I don't know about everyone else but I say "fuck" a lot at work and no one cares. Yes, I have an office job and I have said it in front of our customers and my director, we're adults, we use adult language. Gore, mostly nekked people, some bowflex commercials, 2014 F1 car noses, these things should have NSFW tags. If you can't say things like "shit, damn, fuck, George Carlin" at work, that's fine but I can and therefore these are fine for work.

That one's actually true

I hope this isn't in poor taste. I'd like to request authorship privileges, seeing as I'm about to make my first leap into the world of car ownership. Don't make me beg. I mean, I will if I have to, but...it's degrading, you know?
![]() 02/27/2014 at 19:16 |

Not poor taste at all. I've added you. Welcome aboard. Best of luck with the new (to you?) car.

Many thanks. Also, I have neither the money nor the desire for a new (fresh from the stealership) car.

Nudity is ok...pornography is not.

AV if you feel a comment you make is really worth sharing but do not want to risk it being "unshared" you can give it its own unique post like I did this morning. Of course this requires a few extra steps, but it will ensure that it won't be removed haphazardly. Though we do request you take into consideration whether or not said comment would deserve a post.
![]() 02/27/2014 at 19:41 |

That's what I figured. Pornography is everywhere, we don't need it or want it here.

Fine work, Herr Sam. Talk to you next week or in a couple of months if the Gawker IT team decides to roll out the colourblind-people-hating Kinja update over the weekend. Best of luck! Cheers!

I don't need a zoomed in microscope view. As long as it is in good taste and not just how naked can we get.

I would like to have authorship too! Where do I sign!?

So should I create burner for wishing ill on homophobes? Because I don't consider it being a dick, but I do consider it shit-stirring.
