Very interesting article. Learned some new specifics on our headlight design history vs what the rest of the world had (besides Canada). Leave it to US lawmakers to hold back innovation for several decades -_-

It's true. On my 1997 Accord, the headlights had those nipples for adjustment. When I installed JDM-spec replicas (Euro version also had same housing design), the highs and lows were independently adjustable, no nipples. Halogen housing headlights were then legal in 1997, apparently.

NHTSA is nothing but assbackwards and asshood.

BMW will run into shit with their laser powered lighting system, Audi has already run into trouble with their Matrix system, M-B can't legally market their cars as 'they can drive themselves' even though they damn well can, in the new S-Class's case.

I don't fully agree with you about federalised headlights being a completely bad thing. Thanks to those restrictions we got some really fantastic designs, where carmakers worked hard to conceal the not necessarily beautiful light units. I believe that creativity is at its best when it is a response to restrictions.

Tell ya what: we'll let the new lights through as soon as those ridiculous crush-space pedestrian crash regulations are amended out.
