We've been test-driving trucks for the past few days. This is the vehicle that we have both agreed we really like.
It's a 2005 Tacoma w/ a 4cyl and 5spd, and has 97K on the odo. It's below KBB's and NADA's suggested values. It drives really nice and sounds good. Gets through all the gears without trouble, though I'd agree with the edmunds.com assessment that the gears are a little vague. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
Google-fu says 2005 Tacomas have rust issues on the frame. This makes me sad. Also, the pictures on the website skillfully avoid the front drivers-side view that would show the dents or rub marks that have been filled in but not painted. The insurance adjuster with which I share a bed says it probably hit a stationary object at low speed and the damage is most likely cosmetic. Looking underneath, I don't see any obvious frame damage, but I do plan to take it to a mechanic to look over before going any further...just wanted to see what you folks thought.

Pick ups must be American. Thats why

2wd Tacos look weird
Like some sort of dwarf with acromegaly

...because it's not a Miata.

Looks good to me bud. I bought a car that I found out later had been in an accident requiring repair to the front right, I never would have known, if my insurance adjuster roommate hadn't let me know years after I bought it. All it needed was an alignment.

Well if you're worried about rust head down South to the nearest largest metro area where people buy trucks but don't use them much for anything but runabouts. Just about any truck you buy in Ohio over 10 years old is going to have rust issues from all that road salt.

Honestly, I don't disagree with this.

Tacos hold their value well, it's a good investment imho.

Yup I would agree 2wd looks odd. I see a smidge of snow on the ground or some white river rock... Either way get a 4wd.

IDK where you live, but IMO 2wd trucks are some silly, silly things.
You're dumb for considering this.

I had a 2000 Tacoma TuRD. Great truck, 4x4 and the big wheels. Unfortunately, there was a recall on the frames for not being coated properly. Took it to the dealership and never drove her again. The whole frame was rusted to shit, and I live in MD. Toyota did give us 12K, but I miss that truck. They are great trucks and I would recommend buying one. If you want more, but don't want to spend more; I would recommend going older. These things last forever. I had 175,000 on mine, and it was just getting started.

What are you wanting to do with it?

because pickups are gateway drugs to getting into lifted duallys with diesel stacks and energy drink murals painted on the side.

It's only gonna get city and highway driving. My intention is only to use it for hauling mulch, home improvement stuff, etc.
![]() 02/25/2014 at 09:53 |

We're only using it for minor stuff. Getting mulch, home improvement supplies, that type of thing. I traded my Dakota in 2009, and the number of times we've looked at each other and said "you know, this would be easier if we still had the Dakota" is getting out of hand. The most off-roading it might do is backing across my lawn (which isn't a whole lot larger than the truck itself).

No worries of that. This would be my third pickup, after a '92 S10 and a '99 Dakota. This would be my first truck with a 4cyl, though.

If you are willing to spring a few more thousand dollars, you can get a 1-Owner (instead of 4), 2009 Taco with less miles and a better color. Being so much newer, chances are you'll get a better financing rate, offsetting the price difference somewhat.

Always the answer.

If it's just to haul mulch then it's probably not terrible.
Check the frame. And then check it again. I put my arm through the frame of a 2002 Tacoma that was garage kept.
If it checks out, great. Spend a weekend with a few cans of this and a box of nitrile gloves:

Top coat it, and you are good to go.

Fair point, this. I will say that we did some research last night and managed to locate some financing that will run in the 2.5% range (through my insurance company, oddly enough).

A coworker has a similar story regarding his '97, recalled in 2008. He got $9.5K plus $1K for him to purchase a 2008.

you are wrong, or joking.

Get it. I love those RC Tacomas. I drive a DCLB and its been great.
If you're concerned about it being made in the states, check the door jam, it should say where it was built, or use this handy VIN guide . One of my requirements was that my truck be made in America, but mine was made in Texas, so even better!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Here's a list of the TSBs since 2005.

Not at all concerned about origin. I checked the VIN and a decoder, and it appears to have been built in CA. Honestly, I wouldn't necessarily care either way. Appreciate the TSB link, too!

For a car with that high of a mileage and for that year, that is one helluva rate. Most companies will give you a less-than-competitive rate for anything older than a 2008/09 with over 60K.

You're welcome! I wish you best with your purchase.

That's been my experience too...but apparently they can start around 3.25% and then give discounts to that interest rate for having insurance policies and automatic checking account deductions. May not go that low, but sounds like it'd be lower than what the dealership will give us.

2wd trucks in general are odd. They handle worse in the snow then a fwd or rwd car.

Regardless of performance, this truck looks weird
