Could have sworn Attila Csihar was the vocalist on the De Mysteriis... unless this is a demo version? If it is that's fucking awesome to have Dead on vocals for a studio recording; Live in Leipzig's a great record but their sound is definitely best experienced through headphones.

I'm pretty sure that is Dead.. I might be wrong though...

But Atilla was on vocals on that album though.. Now I'm not so sure. Great album anyway,

I thoroughly enjoy driving around in my little Miata listening to black metal. It is like "Hello world, let me introduce you to the sounds of my people." It helps that I am a big bearded fellow that really shouldn't fit inside a Miata. . .

I'm right there with you on the album, De Mysteriis is a killer record on all fronts. Truth be told I'm more of a fan of the more expansive, epic (if you want to use the word) bands like Immortal and Taake, but Mayhem definitely defined the black metal genre, and I have huge respect for them. Well, except Varg...

Attila did re-record the vocals but a few tracks got recorded with Dead singing. I think Freezing Moon and Funeral Fog god recorded with Dead singing and then Attila recorded versions for the release of the album. I don't know when they released the Dead versions of the songs, it had to be on a bonus track or special edition of De Mysteriis.

Varg can go suck a &%=¤. Nice to meet some black metal freaks here on oppo :) Right now I'm listening to Shining (blackjazz), but can't go wrong with some Mayhem :)

Can confirm it's Dead. I think all 3 of them are pretty damn insane in their own ways. Atilla's my favorite though.

Agreed, there are a few of us on here, you just have to post awesome music and we'll show up :P Blackjazz is all sorts of awesome, especially Fisheye, which is just insane. Right now I've got some High on Fire's Surrounded by Thieves cranked in the background while doing homework. Dunno if you're a fan of theirs but they're my favorite band, especially when you're in the "getting stuff done" mode. I like to save black metal for when I can truly get in the mood and immerse myself in the music, though it is awesome to have a break every now and again for some grim and frostbitten jams :)

Figured there were recordings of Dead floating around somewhere, I'd just never heard of their existence. Seems like there's not a lot of information about the band during that time, except for, y'know, the murders and church burnings and stuff.

Between the suicides and burning churches and then the murders I kind of expect there to not be too much information out there. It does seem like there is quite a bit more Mayhem knowledge that has come to the surface in the past few years though.

Yeah, seems like there have been a bunch of media about BM and the early 90's Norwegian scene lately, documentaries especially. I've seen Until the Light Takes Us and True Norwegian Black Metal, but unfortunately neither really seemed to the music or the scene justice. Once Upon a Time In Norway is on YouTube and I've meant to check that out, but for the most part everything you'd need to know is out there somewhere, it's just the little tidbits of trivia and minutiae that keep popping up from a bunch of different sources that make the scene so compelling.

I think Atilla's my favourite too.. But dead was a proper nutcase.. Not that that is a good thing.

Lords of Chaos was my jumping in point into the world of the metal history. I can't remember the other book I read that really got me interested in the history of the black metal scene. Another reason why things are coming back to light is that Varg was getting some press time again for him acting like a crazy bastard.

You know, I thought about picking up Lords of Chaos, I just never got around to it. Was it a good read? I've heard Varg was the main focus, which is kinda 'meh' considering all the hype and attention he's gotten over the years, particularly recently with the terrorism/weapons charges or whatever the hell was going on in France (I'd love a book by or about Fenriz or Abbath or some elder statesman type instead of the typical Varg/Mayhem/Helvete stuff), but if it's a decent book I'll definitely add it to my summer roadtripping list.

It was a decent read, I honestly skipped over a bunch of the crazy Varg stuff on how he believes the Nazis live under Antarctica and all the UFO bullshit. But if I remember correctly there was a bunch of interesting facts other than the usual Varg stuff. It was a while ago that I picked it up and read it.

I never understood why Vikernes got so much praise and fandom. I personally found his music to be absolute rubbish (he was one of the worst metal vocalists I've had the displeasure to hear) and - rarely spoken of - he was a fucking sellout too, besides his widely publicized infatuation with NS bullshit. After some years in prison, decides to turn ambient and claims metal is "nigger music". Still, countless BM heads continue to praise the man like he was a god.

I'll have to check it out then. Even if it's Varg-centric (fuck that guy) it's always interesting to read more on the scene.
