It is a little on the high side, but it does have lowish miles and the rare titanium gray color. It isn't a CP but it is a pass for me as I'd rather pick up a $8,000 04 and put the rest of the money in a turbo kit and suspension mods. . . I honestly think the on MSM's worth this much now have below 10,000 miles, which still takes them out of "collector car" status. I don't think there will be too many low mileage MSMs out there in 10-15 years as most of them are driven pretty hard so that might end up driving up desire, but over all you can build a better miata for that price.

I used to be into the MSM but then I read about the trans, plus it only packs something like 180hp. Like you, I'd just turbo a standard Miata instead.

I'll take a 5 speed as well. The tranny in the MSM isn't bad, it just isn't geared correctly. You may be able to fix it with a different ring and pinion, but if you are going to give me six gears at least make the sixth one a true overdrive. . .

Ehh, unless you can take the time to LITERALLY overhaul an engine for use with a turbo, I'd rather if they sold it with a Turbo option.
It's like turbocharging an EJ22 open deck. Why?

About the price I say crack pipe,16grand for a 2005 Miata is just too much,regardless of Mazdaspeed.Maybe if it was 9000$ i would say nice price.

My friend had one of these when I had a regular '00 with suspension pkg. The MSM was so underwhelming, and even with the additional power, it didn't feel any faster.
$16k, and you know they probably gave the owner $7,500 for it ;)

Not really, no real preparation other than making sure the motor is healthy is necessary. The BP motor was designed for a turbo and can safely put out about 225=250 horsies at the wheels with out giving up reliability. Plus Mazda kinda half assed the MSM so there are a few things that should be done to it to get the most out of the turbo.

I'unno. Turboing a NA requires a lot more skill than "making sure the motor is healthy".

Not when you buy the FMII kit. Sure the tuning is an issue, but there should be a safe conservative tune on the ecu when you put it in the car. But seriously the Miata motor was designed for boost and responds really well to it. You just need to find a tuner to get some dyno time in.

I still think you have to overhaul an engine just to be safe - look at what happened to a typical EJ22 when it sees more than 2 PSI.

Well to be fair, the subies have gasket issues. Head gaskets are pretty simple to do in a miata so if it goes it isn't to bad to replace. Really Mazda didn't change too much on the motor in the MSM, they went back to the 99-00 head and put a larger intake cam in there and then put a turbo on it.
You shouldn't have to rebuild a motor just to turbo it, especially if it was originally designed to be a boosted motor. Miata motors start to fail when you push them over 250 horsies or so. That is when you can benefit from stroking it out and putting some stronger con rods and lowering the compression. But if 200 horsies suits your fancy all you need to do is check the compression of the motor, make sure it doesn't eat oil and then turbo it. The reason why that mentality exists is because you can get a different motor cheaper than it costs to tear into one to rebuild one. Some cars you need to get into and monkey around with parts to get it to a safe state to boost, but the miata is not one of those cars.

It's not just the headgaskets - the open cylinder bores in the early models (and mind you, this was BEFORE head gaskets became an issue.)
I can't really see any different than a Mazda engine requiring an overhaul just for mere 200 horses and how many PSis have you.

I think it is more of the mind set that it costs more to overhaul a motor to make massive power than it does to buy another motor and just put in. You do realize how much it costs to rebuild a motor right? It isn't cheap and really isn't necessary if you have good compression and leak down tests. It also helps if the motor doesn't have a 12:1 compression ratio. The miata is already a low compression motor and it is a non-interference motor.
