Unrelated - did I show you the red F430 6MT that's for sale right now yet, the one that used to belong to Nicholas Cage? I saw it before my self-imposed ban on searching for cars I can't buy. So I would not be breaking any rules by linking it.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 11:16 |

No you did not! I'd love to see it. So many things to see when you're in SoCal.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 15:37 |

It's actually in Nor Cal. Which is good. If it was down here I'd probably have a new 144 month auto loan...
http://www.luxmotorcars.com/2005-Ferrari-F…
The want is so strong...
![]() 02/20/2014 at 15:43 |

MMMMMM so clean! Dat shifter.....
It's not even that expensive either...
![]() 02/20/2014 at 15:53 |
|
The shift knob is pretty cool.
I actually think they will take an offer that is at least $10K lower than their list price for these reasons:
1. While their list price would be about right for that year and mileage if the car had zero mods, the car does have mods. I happen to like the mods, but most Ferrari buyers want 100% stock cause they plan on selling their car after a year or two, and it's easier to sell with zero mods.
2. Most people want Corsa Rosso over tan. This is Scuderia Rosso over black. It's harder to resell this car. I haven't seen the lighter and more orange Scuderia Rosso in person so I don't know if I like it more than Corsa yet (I do gusta Corsa Rosso very much). I also prefer tan leather to black, especially for a weekend car. But I wouldn't hate black, especially if I drove the car a lot. Black doesn't get discolored from jeans or show dirt as much.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 15:57 |
|
All you have to do is say these things to a salesperson, and they'll probably knock off a decent amount of money.
Black would definitely not be my choice either on a car like this, it just doesn't fit well. But that is really a good negotiating point.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 16:08 |
|
Or they'll tell me that I'm a cocky bastard and to go away, haha.
I'm kind of relieved that I'm not actually in a position to do something like this right now. Thinking about dealing with a slimy exotic used car salesman (I think they can be just as bad as a regular used car salesman if you get a bad one) is sending shivers down my spine. Buying cars is a pain...
![]() 02/20/2014 at 16:10 |
|
Really? Usually when I talk to more high-end places they're more knowledgeable/respectful. Example. Except Audi, that guy was clueless.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 16:20 |
|
I'm not saying all are bad. But some of them are terrible.
Also I'm talking about buying used. With buying new there is way less for the sales person to hide. If they know the car and don't try to screw you on price that's all that matters.
But used car salesmen often hide issues that they know the car has. And the luxury/exotic used car salesmen are just as prone to doing this. They know exactly what's wrong and exactly how much it costs to fix it.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 16:25 |
|
I have a very local used car dealership that I've never been to, put pass all the time. All they sell are used BMWs, Audis, and Mercedes for fairly reasonable prices. I'm pretty sure they still have a Gallardo in their showroom. I need to stop by there one day. I'm sure they'd try to convince me to buy a car because I look like a stupid young person.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 16:30 |
|
They might be good guys. Who knows. All depends on their business model. If they care about repeat sales then they'll accept lower profit margins. If all they care about is maxing out how much they make on each car then they'll be cool with being shady.
I much prefer to buy from a private party, when possible.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 16:31 |
|
Buying a Ferrari from a private party just doesn't seem possible. You should ask Doug how much he wants for his 360.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 17:49 |
|
Haha that would be awesome to buy Doug's car. I'd be instantly famous.
There are some PP Ferraris around. Another one I found before the self-imposed ban is a 1994 348 Spider 5MT, red on tan with under 20K miles for about $43,000.
I so don't care that people hate on the 348. I want that car!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 17:59 |
|
I like 348s they're pretty cool! Unlike you, I have not imposed a ban on looking at cars for sale, mainly because I actually cannot afford them. So I've just been looking at new 911s and Jaguar XJLRs today. That Jaguar is so cool!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:01 |

let me link you up then!
my memory was wrong, it's $47,500
but i bet he'd take $43K!
http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/…
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:02 |
|
Nice! I'd drive it, but it just seems like one of those cars that will light on fire during ownership.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:03 |
|
actually i think it's less likely to light on fire
reason: smaller engine produces less heat
and back then ferrari wasn't using fancy materials. things were bolted together, not glued together to save weight
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:05 |
|
That makes sense, but aren't all of the mechanisms that work the convertible top right over the engine? It seems like that would cause some cooling issues with congestion and limited space.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:09 |
|
Hmm good point. Cooling could be tougher. It would need some research.
I had done some research on the 348 Spider before and hadn't seen that issue listed. While the initial 348 coupe and targa were poorly received the 348 got improvements during its run, and the Spider was much loved. It was the first fully open topped Ferrari since the 70s.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:13 |
|
I don't like the spider as much as I do the coupe/targa. It's still a cool car it just doesn't do it for me. That being said, you should totally buy a C7!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:17 |
|
I know coupes and targas drive better. But all my cars have fixed tops. There is something magical about having a very open top. You feel like you're driving an F1 car!
I can't buy a C7. When I was in the car with my Dad the other day he saw one for the first time and yelled 'that thing is ugly!'
While I don't have to do what he says cause I buy my own cars I still don't want to cross him. Because: he works on my cars for free.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:22 |
|
WHAT! That's the first person I've ever heard of that doesn't like the looks. And no, don't buy one because someone working on your cars for free is a blessing.
I'm trying so hard not so share links of R8's for sale on the internet I keep finding.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:31 |
|
yeah haha he saw the car from behind it and HATED the tail lights and how the exhaust tips were placed
did you find any R8s for under $60K? if so then OK to share, even if flappy paddle!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:34 |
|
Much cheaper actually!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:36 |
|
haha wut? $2 for a brand new one?
R8s for everyone?
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:37 |
|
I'll take 5! The actual cheapest one on cars.com is $83k, and it has the R-tronic. The cheapest manual is $88k.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:41 |
|
why is cars.com using craigslist tactics?
$5K less for R Tronic is not worth it. the more expensive and more frequent clutch replacements will wipe that out in less than 2 years. plus no gated shifter...
now if the cheapest one was $25K less than the 6MT car that would be interesting. then one could always get a 6MT used Cayman with the savings to make up for the R8 having the wrong transmission!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:43 |
|
Most definitely! The $83k R-tronic one had an "R-Tronic Warranty" on it until 2016, whatever that means. Still not worth it.
Bad news, the cheapest manual/V10 model is $117k. At least it's certified.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:46 |
|
lol i had not heard of r-tronic specific warranty!
the cost of used R8s is too damn high
a 2008 V8 6MT with 25K miles and no warranty should be $65K
a 2008 V8 R-Tronic with 25K miles and no warranty should be $40K
if i was obama i'd make a law that specified these prices
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:48 |
|
Oh we're making up prices now?
Every car: $1 (for me exclusively so I still feel special driving around in a supercar)
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:51 |
|
hahaha
ok if i wake up and find that i'm obama i'll make that law too!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:53 |
|
Yes! That's all I want anyway.
Did you get the 911 fixed? Or is that going to happen this weekend? Don't give me the "it might rain excuse" because that's what the weather app is for.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:55 |
|
no. i just got over the fear of rain. i remembered it almost never happens, haha
i just drive it as is. maybe i should put some clear tape over the crack in the tail light. then it will look like a racing incident and track day fix, haha
![]() 02/20/2014 at 18:59 |
|
That's the coolest type of fix.
Being in California, how many 911s do you see in a day? It must be in the tens/twenties.
When I commuted from my house to New Jersey for my summer job, I maybe saw one on the way. It's probably so different there. People are afraid to bring out any type of sportscar if the weather isn't perfect for like a week straight.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:01 |
|
yeah i should just leave that fix in forever! that way if i back into something again or someone hits me i don't have to fix it again, haha
hmm
by the beach it probably is over 10 a day
now maybe 0n a low day, 3 on a high day
people in your area are pansies! tell them to just get the 4S. they'll be fine!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:04 |
|
Guess what! I've never seen a RWD 911 on the road! They're all idiots!
"I'm going to buy this ultra-capable, well rounded sports car that can do anything I need, and then never drive it! I'll just take my Subaru to work, it's too cold anyway."
-every sportscar owner in the northeast.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:06 |
|
never?
whaaaaaaat!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:07 |
|
Ok maybe once, but I had to get the point across. They're all paranoid dumbasses here.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:12 |
|
and it's not like it's raining or snowing 100% of the time!
i have driven the 997 in very heavy rain and it being RWD was not a problem at all
ground clearance was the only problem. you can't see the potholes when roads are flooded. and it's kind of scary when you hit them without seeing them first in a low car.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:14 |
|
I've driven the Boxster in heavy rain too, no problems at all! It rains/snows here maybe once a week, it's not like it's bad weather most of the time, it's usually just depressing overcast!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:18 |
|
modern traction control does wonders!
if rain and overcast weather was a problem then the UK wouldn't be such a hotbed of RWD coupes and roadsters!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:21 |
|
Exactly! California can into cars.
That's why it's much more of an event when driving a sports car in New York. You're in a sea of boring cars, and you'll be lucky to spot a car that has RWD on your drive. People are much more excited to see a sports car because of how uncommon they are. I bet over there no one bats an eye when a Cayman goes through a drive thru, but when they even come out on the road it's like a famous person is in town.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:31 |
|
Yeah a Cayman is just a "poor mans porsche" around these parts
Dude you need to get a cayman. You'll be famous in your town !
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:36 |
|
I was famous when I drove the Boxster that's for sure!
It was a miracle I was never pulled over in that car. I was pulled over twice in the Bimmer though! Never ticketed though, always coming home from work meant that I had a Burger King uniform on, and if you have a fast food uniform on, cops never ticket you for some reason.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:42 |
|
LOL!
They take pity on you and let you out of the ticket!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:44 |
|
That's what I figured! Wasn't complaining though. The coolest car in my neighborhood is a 4 year old SL550. Bleh. What about you?
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:51 |
|
I know you weren't complaining. That is super awesome that you got out of the ticket.
I got out of a ticket when driving home from work late at night once. I was going WAY too fast and just apologized and said I had just worked a 16 hour day (true). He felt bad for me and let me go.
I don't know all the cool cars in my neighborhood yet cause you have to catch them on the street or being taken in or out of the garage.
I think somebody close by has an R8.
And not sure where the guy with the red Ferrari 550 lives. I know he must be within 5 miles of me but not sure if he's in my area or the next town over
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:54 |
|
Oh that reminds me! Some guy recently got an FF in the town next to mine. I see it from time to time. Metallic grey, with similar metallic grey wheels. It's sexy as hell. You should buy one!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:57 |
|
omg don't tempt me
i didn't even like it at first
but after being on oppo for a while i'm all into shooting breaks
today i saw a new beetle from far away and got all excited because i thought it was a clown shoe bimmer from that distance, lol
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:58 |
|
That's what you should buy! One of the clownshoe Bimmers. Such a cool car. Too bad their prices are so inflated, or I'd buy one for sure.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 19:59 |
|
yeah the prices are WAY too inflated!!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 20:01 |
|
Or maybe they're becoming classics just like the E30 M3! Buy one while they're cheap!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 20:01 |
|
they are already inflated like the E30 M3
impossible to get cheap!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 20:03 |
|
You should get an i8, like Battery Tender Unnecessary.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 20:12 |
|
He's really getting one?
Oh I forgot to tell you. I have been driving the E90 M3 more since hurting the Porsche. Still driving the 911 but not 9 out of 10 days like I was for a while before that.
One thing I've realized about the E90 with DCT - while being the least engaging it's also the most effective.
Having a smooth and quick shifting auto mode with over 400 HP makes it the ultimate car to get shit done. Battling road hazards and shitty drivers is a breeze. You just put both hands on the wheel and GO.
A PDK Cayman S or 997 would be one badass car for you one day. You could move jobs and locations at any time no prob. Have to drive in the city? No prob. Have to hold work calls over Bluetooth? No prob. Have to make a call while also using the cars nav? No sweat. Want to go to the track on the weekend and kick some ass? Check.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 20:17 |
|
Yes, he's told me twice already. He ordered it back in September(!), in Grey.
A PDK 911 would probably be a perfect car for me if I lived in the city. By the time I could buy one, I'd probably already have a membership at Monticello and/or the Classic Car Club. It would be the perfect all-rounder car for me to throw about.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 20:28 |
|
Wow. He has some balls! I only buy regular bimmers if they were made within 3 model years of the car being replaced by the new model. I wouldn't trust the first year of a N/A bimmer, let alone one that's both turbo and hybrid!!
If you get a PDK 911 one day you could literally DD it for at least a decade. Even if you had kids you could still squeeze them in back at first.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 20:31 |
|
Exactly! The PDK equipped 911s came out as refreshed models, so they're probably ultra reliable. Porsche makes great cars, hands down, there's no denying that. So much useability!
And he's trading in the Range Rover for the i8, which means he's keeping the SLS, the E30 M3, and another car(I forgot what it is).
Also, so much WANT!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 20:43 |
|
The PDK 997s and Caymans are ULTRA reliable. They were the refreshed models and had the better DFI engines. They are some of the most reliable cars you can buy period, not just the most reliable sports cars.
Man Battery Tender Unnecessary is a legend! He will have an SLS, E30 M3 and an i8. Very cool. That's what, at least $375K worth of cars?
That clown shoe is nice!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 20:50 |
|
I'm pretty sure Porsche is the third most reliable brand overall according to some studies.
Yeah Battery Tender Unnecessary is one badass mofo.
My dad wants to buy a PDK equipped 997, I'm trying to get him to buy a CPO one instead of a new car.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 21:11 |
|
It was in the top 3 a few years ago. Maybe even #1 for a little bit.
But the damn 991 screwed that up, LOL
You mean your Dad wants a PDK 991?
A CPO 997.2 C2S PDK would be way better. He would save a small fortune!
And he would have the more reliable car and hydraulic power steering.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 21:13 |
|
A CPO 99 7 yes! He just wants a PDK Carrera, that's all he tells me. But he's still scared about buying used for some awful reason. CPO PDK 911s are within his price range. I just have to get him to test drive one, that'll work.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 21:46 |
|
Tell him to go Carrera S if he can't find a Carrera with PASM
Everyday I wake up wishing I had PASM :(
It's the ONLY option that matters on a 997 (other than PDK of course if you want it)
![]() 02/20/2014 at 21:50 |
|
dude if driving a manual wasn't painful for your dad he could get this car:
http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/…
dat blue...
![]() 02/20/2014 at 21:51 |
|
Have you driven a 997 with the PASM? How much difference does it make?
![]() 02/20/2014 at 21:52 |
|
those racing harnesses
![]() 02/20/2014 at 21:59 |
|
only very briefly so i can only guess
but having EDC on my E90 makes me think it would help a lot
there is a huge difference between driving the E90 in the 3 different stiffness modes
the softest mode is comfortable without being too soft
the middle mode is stiff enough for most situations
the stiffest mode is super bumpy and only needed for track use
![]() 02/20/2014 at 22:03 |
|
Sounds really useful, but also ultra expensive if it breaks. But on a Porsche it won't because Porsche!
![]() 02/20/2014 at 22:05 |
|
Haha that's what I told myself when I found my car - "don't worry that it doesn't have PASM, at least it will be cheaper to maintain"
But then I really wished I had it, haha
Also it's harder to find used C2s with a decent amount of options in general. For not much more you can get a nicely optioned 997 C2S with PASM, rear parking sensors (which I also REALLY wish I had, LOL), nav, bluetooth, universal remote, etc
![]() 02/20/2014 at 22:08 |
|
LOL Parking sensors!!
I'll keep an eye out for ones on sale with the PASM, maybe I'll find one.
![]() 02/20/2014 at 22:09 |
|
They're out there, but they are usually super highly optioned C2s, which cost almost as much as the C2S. So they don't make a lot of sense...
