You go buy a 800-lb-capacity dolly from Home Depot for 20 bucks and you set 1200 lbs on it and drive home!
*I apologize for the portrait filming... my roommate did it.. I punched him.. justice...
Backstory:
I was driving home to meet up with some friends to watch the olympics running a little late so I was driving quickly. There are some large speed bumps in my neighborhood that I hit going not slow and I made a quick turn onto another street and all of the sudden my car dropped to the ground and I slid about 50 feet to a stop. As I was coming to a stop I was looking out my window for my wheel to pass me or something because I realized something pretty dramatic happened to it but I didn't see it. I think the speed bumps did the final damage to a super worn out ball joint.
I got out and snapped this photo:
I quickly realized that the ball joint failed and there wasn't anything I could do at that moment so called my brother to come pick me up and knocked on the persons door to let them know what happened and that'd my car would be in front of their house for the night.
Once I got my car home I ordered some parts and got it all finished yesterday:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
And back to normal! Who knew something so dramatic would cost about 40 bucks in parts...
Oh yeah, the little dolly basically disintegrated into a (literally) smoldering wood pile by the time I got to my house:

1) How many miles on the ball joint?
2) Are you saving the dolly to use when the other one fails or just returning to the store?

Especially like the hatchet in the repair photo.

This is the kind of ingenuity that put a man on the moon everyone, please take note.

Haha! It was the closest thing I had to a hammer!

If it's the original it has 225k miles.
And I ordered a replacement for the other side so it doesn't happen again. :)

I would try to return the dolly to the store, just for sh*ts and giggles. And film the clerk's reaction (in landscape ;))

Same thing happened to my dads 2000 Tundra, but at around 60mph. Messed up a lot of suspension and front drivetrain bits. Basically needed a whole new front end. Nearly five kilodollars to repair. Nice work Toyota.

That sucks.. Yeah I'm really thankful it didn't happen at a higher speed. Woulda SUCKED...
And this does seem to be a common problem.. I've heard of it happening to people with 3rd gen's before, but usually only when a small lift has been installed. I guess my mileage made up for that though.

Wasn't there a recall for that? My dad's got an 02, but he got his done when the recall happened and we're over 300k miles with no issues.

Not sure. I know my dad just had some recall last year for frame rust. They took the whole bed off and rustproofed and repainted the whole frame. Not sure if the rust was repaired, if there was any...

The same thing happened to me about 100 feet from work. luckily it let o as I was pulling away from a stop sign. I walked back to the shop, grabbed a jack and furniture dolly, and drove back to the shop like that. I was able to park in an empty bay and replaced the ball joints the next day. Funny thing after the event I read through the file of repair receipts I got from the seller when I bought the car. I noticed several recent repair receipts where the mechanic had written in large letters across the bill "REPLACE BALL JOINTS SOON!". now I make it a point to go through those files when I buy a used car.

Oh. The magical "rust". Southern California wonders what this does.
